Bachelor of Social Science

Social science provides you with the opportunity to analyse, challenge and gain an insight into theories about life cycle, gender, class, race, work, social justice and social organisation.

Social science theories are the result of systematic thinking, observations and reflection, and contribute to political and moral debate in society, rather than dictate precise answers to complex social problems.

The APAC (Australian Psychology Accreditation Council) accredited major sequence is not available to students who commence the program in 2012 or after. A Psychology major is available in the program, however it is not accredited for students commencing study in 2012 onwards. Students who commence the program in 2012 or after, and who wish to complete an accredited Psychology program, are advised to apply for admission to the 4 year Bachelor of Psychology program.

This program shows you how to think analytically, critically question and synthesise information, and appreciate the importance of cultural diversity in a global age.

Students develop skills in planning, implementing and managing social behaviour in the workplace, social policy and social programs. You can major in the following course areas (C - Callaghan campus O - Ourimbah Campus):

Social Science graduates gain employment in a broad range of rewarding careers at the local, national and global levels. Graduates can expect to find employment in public sector agencies, community organisations and private firms as social researchers, policy analysts, program managers, project coordinators, human service managers, case managers, welfare officers, community development officers, human resource managers and general administrators.

All domestic students can now enrol in an undergraduate Diploma in Languages alongside their main degree program. This diploma will enhance proficiency in another language or languages, and will increase international career opportunities. Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree. Please note that all language courses are held on campus (face to face) at Callaghan.

Students who perform well during the Bachelor of Social Science program with a credit average (GPA of 5.0) or greater, may apply for a further year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) study to obtain an Honours degree. The Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) program allows students to further develop their specific areas of interest.

For students who are interested in undertaking an elective Social Science placement, please enrol in SOCS3300.

Psychology Major.

This major is for students with a general interest in Psychology, and for those who see Psychology as complementary to their studies in Social Science. It is not accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC).

All students can access additional learning development mechanisms provided by the Centre for Teaching and Learning.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.
