Nurses are an essential part of the health care system and work to promote and maintain the health of individuals and communities. Nursing provides varied career opportunities and nurses fulfil diverse roles such as clinicians, educators, researchers, managers and consultants.

Over the program, you will attend around 800 hours in clinical settings in community centres, aged care areas, mental health settings and major teaching hospitals throughout the Hunter, Central Coast, Mid North Coast and University Department of Rural Health (UDRH) sites.

You will cover courses including nursing therapeutics, foundations of nursing and human bioscience. There is an option to select a mental health or aged care stream. Nursing therapeutics courses include clinical placements. Hands-on clinical experience is undertaken initially in the laboratories on campus and then in settings off-campus. Students are well prepared clinically and academically for rewarding careers in a wide variety of health settings.

A significant component of the program is conducted online via the internet and therefore you need to have computer skills, including word processing, email and web searching. If you do not have these skills you are advised to undertake a course.

If you have not studied HSC Biology or Chemistry you are advised to undertake bridging courses conducted by the English Language and Foundation Studies Centre during January and February.

• All students in the Bachelor of Nursing degree need be fully immunised before commencing clinical placement. All students must complete the Academic Integrity Module in Sem 1, Year 1 of their enrolment.

• A TAFE Diploma in Nursing,
• Enrolled nurses holding a TAFE Certificate IV in Nursing (Enrolled Nurse)
• Enrolled nurses holding a TAFE Advanced Certificate in Enrolled Nursing or a TAFE Certificate IV in

Nursing (Enrolled Nursing) who have also completed the TAFE/Newcastle University Enrolled Nursing Bridging Program

• Registration as a professional nurse with a Approved Overseas Nursing Registration Authority
• All courses must have been completed within the last seven years.

The Bachelor of Nursing is awarded as an ordinary degree. Candidates seeking an Honours award should enrol in the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours).

Clinical experience includes laboratory simulation activities and off campus experience in a range of clinical facilities including medical-surgical, acute psychiatric and aged care facilities. Off campus experience involves a minimum of 30 weeks in total of placement in various facilities, with increasing time in years 2 and 3. Nursing students undertake clincial experience in community centres, aged care settings, mental health facitities, major teaching hospitals and the University Department of Rural Health facilities throughout the Hunter/Central Coast Health and mid North Coast Health provide clinical learning opportunities.

Graduates of this program are eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

Entry is based on overseas qualifications which are considered equivalent to Australian qualifications as well as satisfactory English language requirements. Credit may be awarded for students who have completed nursing studies overseas. Credit will be assessed on an individual basis. All courses must have been completed within the last ten years.

International students must comply with the University of Newcastle's English language proficiency requirements. All International Students enrolled in the program will be provided with an orientation to familiarise them with the rules, expectations, facilities and services offered by the University. The Bachelor of Nursing program includes 10 units of Electives and 10 units of Directed Courses. Three courses are offered as possible electives by the School, two at 1000 level and one at 2000 level.

NURS2230 Clinical for International Nurses is available only to International Registered Nurses and must be taken by International Registered Nurses as their Directed Course in Second Year.
