The Bachelor of Commerce is your first step to becoming a fully qualified accountant or undertaking careers in finance and economics. You'll be exposed to industry-relevant areas of study including the opportunity to specialise in one of three major sequences: Accounting, Economics, Finance. As accountancy and financial management are at the very heart of all organisations, you'll find commerce is a field offering enormous scope and opportunity.

Many of our graduates have gone on to land great jobs, not just in Australia but in Asia, the United States and Europe. According to the 2008 Good Universities Guide, 98 per cent of our graduates seeking employment found employment within four months of graduating.
There are three major sequences of study offered in the degree program:

Commerce graduates have a wide choice of careers including positions in professional accounting, business management, senior administration, banking and finance. A finance specialisation opens up careers in international banking, international finance, investment management, treasury management, money market operations and financial forecasting. Career choices for Economics graduates include public and private sector positions in finance and securities analysis, and in policy analysis and development in government. Careers are also available in investment analysis, labour market research, taxation economics and in treasury positions in banking and environmental planning.

Students must complete the units set out at http://www.newcastle.edu.au/Resources/Schools/Newcastle Business School/Accounting and Finance/CPA-course-list-jun09.pdf in order to meet the academic requirements for Associate membership of CPA Australia and enrolment in the CPA Program, and for enrolment in the Chartered Accountants Program of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. The Finance Major Sequence in the Bachelor of Commerce meets the requirements for the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (FINSIA). Students may also be able to gain accreditation with the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) with regard to various education and knowledge requirements under RG146. Students wishing to follow a double major need to undertake 60 or 70 units of study unique to the second major in place of electives.
Back to topRequirements and Structure
To complete the degree, students must pass courses totalling 240 units (generally made up of 24 courses worth 10 units each). The 240 units required to complete the degree must include:
- No more than 100 units at the 1000 (first year) level
- At least 60 units at the 3000 (third year) level
- The core courses at all levels
- The compulsory and directed courses for at least one major sequence
- The remaining units can be selected from any other discipline area within the University.
Please note that some courses in the major sequence listed below may require additional assumed knowledge other than the compulsory courses within the major.
Where two approved Major Sequences are completed within the single degree, an overlap of not more than 20 units is permitted between major Sequence courses at 3000 level.
Not all major sequences are located at each location.
