Bachelor of Arts
A Bachelor of Arts degree enables you to study what you are passionate about in life, and convert this learning into a career. You have the flexibility to choose from a broad range of courses, and to tailor the program to match your specific interests.
We currently have over 20 majors to choose from.
As the program is offered on both the Newcastle and Central Coast campuses, courses from either campus may be counted towards the Bachelor of Arts, provided that you meet the program requirements. You will undertake two majors, so one could be from a traditional arts and humanities area and one could be more vocationally focused.
The choice is yours. You can major in the following course areas (C - Callaghan campus, O - Ourimbah campus):
- Aboriginal Studies (C)
- Ancient History (C)
- Chinese (C)
- Classical Languages (Latin & Greek) (C)
- Creative Arts (O)
- Drama (C, O)
- English (C, O)
- Film, Media and Cultural Studies (C)
- French (C)
- German (C)
- History (C, O)
- Human Geography and the Environment (C)
- International Affairs (C, O)
- Japanese (C)
- Linguistics (C)
- Philosophy (C)
- Politics & Policy (C, O)
- Psychology Studies (C, 0)
- Religious Studies (C)
- Sociology & Anthropology (C, O)
- Writing (C)
SAs an arts graduate, you have highly developed research, communication, creative, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills, and the capacity to think outside the square. These are the skills that employers look for when making recruitment choices.
As well as equipping you with these general skills, and Arts degree also builds specialist skills, in the major of your choice.

Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a
Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree. Please note that all language courses are held on campus (face to face) at Callaghan.
There is no assumed knowledge for entry into the Bachelor of Arts
Mathematics for those anticipating studying Psychology.
English Advanced for all other Majors.
Students who perform well during the Bachelor of Arts degree with a credit average (GPA of 5.0) or greater, may undertake a further year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) study to obtain an Honours degree. The Honours degree allows students to further develop their specific areas of interest.
An approved sequence in Psychology followed by an accredited 4th year in psychology provides a four-year Australian Psychological Society-accredited program and satisfies the requirements for provisional registration with the NSW Registration Board.
The 120 Unit APS Accredited Sequence may be viewed on the 120 Unit APS Accredited Sequence Program Enrolment Checklist under the Further Information section above.
International students must comply with the University of Newcastle's English language proficiency requirements. All International Students enrolled in the program will be provided with an orientation to familiarise them with the rules, expectations, facilities and services offered by the University. Please visit http://www.newcastle.edu.au/students/international/student-support/ to find out more about the support services available to international students.
Students with disabilities who require reasonable adjustments to undertake their program should contact the Disability Support Service before semester or early in the semester. Some adjustments need up to 4 weeks lead time to organise, so it is imperative that early contact is made. The Disability Support Service and relevant Faculty and School officers will work together to ensure reasonable adjustments are provided in a timely manner.
Please note: All students must fulfil the inherent requirements of the programs and courses they are undertaking. While reasonable adjustments can be made, these adjustments cannot compromise academic integrity. It is the student's responsibility to check all the requirements of courses, and consider the effects of any medical condition or disability on their ability to complete course requirements. Please visit http://www.newcastle.edu.au/service/disability/ for more information.
Career Development - Elective
A course on Career Development for Bachelor of Arts students, HUMA1001, is available to students in the program in Semester 2 each year. This is an elective course (not part of a major). For the course description see Further Information.
Psychology Major
The major is for students with a general interest in Psychology, and for those who see Psychology as complimentary to their other majors within the Bachelor of Arts. Students seeking to take an Australian Psychological Society accredited sequence within the Bachelor of Arts are required to take additional psychology courses and should consult the School of Psychology.
All students can access additional learning development mechanisms provided by the Centre for Teaching and Learning at http://www.newcastle.edu.au/unit/ctl/lsp/
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.
The Bachelor of Arts program has been revised and new program requirements are in place for students who commenced from 2005 or existing students who have transferred to the new program. The revised Program Requirements do not apply to students who commenced studies in the Bachelor of Arts prior to 2005 and who have remained in the original program.
In order to qualify for the Bachelor of Arts award, a student must pass 240 units comprising.
- at least 80 units of an Approved Arts major as set out in the list of Approved majors, of which no more than 20 units should be at 1000 level, and at least 40 units must be at 3000 level;
- at least 80 units of Approved Arts major as set out in the list of Approved majors, of which no more than 20 units should be at 1000 level, and at least 40 units must be at 3000 level.
- up to 80 units of elective courses. Elective units can be taken from any Faculty of the University, except courses that are restricted by enrolment for students in a particular program.
A student may count a maximum of 100 units at 1000 level. There is no maximum number of units for studies at 2000 or 3000 level.
It is usual practice for a student to select four course areas at 1000 level and to select major areas of study once interests and skills have been realised.
Full-time enrolment (80 units per year) will enable program completion in three years. Students may enrol in less than 80 units per year and completion will take proportionately longer.
Students who commenced a major before it was deleted are permitted to continue with that major by enrolling in designated courses still on offer (available in other majors) or by requesting permission to substitute courses to make up the major requirements if not enough courses are on offer.
Students who have completed courses listed in the Film, Media, and CS majors prior to 2009 that no longer appear in the revised major can include these courses towards the completion of a Film, Media and CS major.
Students who have successfully completed:
