Description
A Bachelor of Arts degree enables you to study what you are passionate about in life, and convert this learning into a career. You have the flexibility to choose from a broad range of majors and minors, and to tailor the program to match your specific interests.
Within the Bachelor of Arts program we currently offer 15 majors and 16 minors. Some majors/minors are offered predominantly at one campus and others are offered at both the Callaghan and Ourimbah campus or online. The availability of courses within the below listed major/minor is subject to change. You can choose majors/minors in the following course areas:-

Program learning outcomes
On successful completion of the program students will have:
- a broad and coherent body of knowledge, with depth in the underlying principles and concepts in one or more disciplines as a basis for independent lifelong learning
- cognitive skills to review critically, analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge
- cognitive and technical skills to demonstrate a broad understanding of knowledge with depth in some areas
- cognitive and creative skills to exercise critical thinking and judgement in identifying and solving problems with intellectual independence
- communication skills to present a clear, coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas
- demonstrated the application of knowledge and skills with initiative and judgement in planning, problem solving and decision making in professional practice and/or scholarship
- demonstrated the application of knowledge and skills to adapt knowledge and skills in diverse contexts
- demonstrated the application of knowledge and skills with responsibility and accountability for own learning and professional practice and in collaboration with others within broad parameters
- an in-depth understanding of at least one specialist area in the Bachelor of Arts

Academic requirements for program completion
Total units required
240 units
Program duration
3 years full-time or part-time equivalent up to 8 years maximum.
International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. Program requirements
This program requires the successful completion of 240 units. Students must complete one of the following structures:
1) DOUBLE MAJOR OPTION: Two 80 unit Majors & 80 units of electives (See Additional Information for Suggested Electives) OR
2) SINGLE MAJOR & DOUBLE MINOR OPTION: One 80 unit Major, two 40 unit Minors & 80 units of electives (See Additional Information for Suggested Electives).
Students must complete a minimum of 40 units at each level (1000, 2000, 3000) with no more than 100 units at the 1000 level.
Students must only complete courses that form part of the program and must not complete more than 240 units.
MAJOR/S (excluding French/Japanese Studies Intermediate Sequence majors):
A major must comprise of 80 units of compulsory courses & courses chosen from a course list from one area as follows:
- 20 units at 1000 level (including all 1000 level compulsory courses)
- 20 units at 2000 level (incl. all 2000 level compulsory courses)
- 40 units at 3000 level (incl. all 3000 level compulsory courses).
MINORS (excluding French/Japanese Studies Intermediate Sequence minors):
A minor must comprise of 40 units of compulsory courses & courses chosen from a course list from one area as follows:
- 20 units at 1000 level (incl. all 1000 level compulsory courses)
- 20 units at 2000 level (incl. all 2000 level compulsory courses).
FRENCH STUDIES (INTERMEDIATE SEQUENCE): Please consult with the French Studies Discipline Convenor before enrolling in this sequence.
This major must comprise of 80 units of compulsory courses & courses chosen from a course list as follows:
- 20 units at 2000 level (incl. all 2000 level compulsory courses)
- 60 units at 3000 level (incl. all 3000 level compulsory courses).
This minor must comprise of 40 units of compulsory courses & courses chosen from a course list as follows:
- 20 units at 2000 level (incl. all 2000 level compulsory courses)
FREN3610 French at Advanced Level 1.
JAPANESE STUDIES (INTERMEDIATE SEQUENCE): Please consult with the Japanese Studies Discipline Convenor before enrolling in this sequence.

- When you have successfully completed your program, your transcript will specify completed major/s but will not specify completed minors
- Full-time enrolment (80 units per yr) will enable program completion in 3 yrs. Students may enrol in less per yr but completion will take proportionately longer.

Program Revisions 2018
From 2018 the Aboriginal Studies major will be replaced by the Global Indigenous Studies major. Any student who commenced this program prior to 2018, and who is currently undertaking the Aboriginal Studies major will now complete the Global Indigenous Studies major. All courses remain the same.

Honours
Students who perform well during the Bachelor of Arts degree with a credit average (GPA of 5.0) or greater, may apply to undertake a further year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) study to obtain an Honours degree. The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree allows students to further develop their specific areas of interest.
Additional information
Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.
Psychology Studies Major/Minor:
The Psychology major/minor is for students with a general interest in Psychology & for those who see Psychology as complementary to their other majors/minors within the Bachelor of Arts. Since 2012 it has not been accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC).
Languages:
Students who already possess knowledge of the French language (eg HSC Continuers or equivalent) are advised to consult with the French Studies Discipline Convenor BEFORE enrolling into the French Studies (Intermediate Sequence).
