Career Summary

Biography

Dr Xiaoli Deng graduated with a PhD in Geodesy from Curtin University of Technology in 2004, specialising in improvement of geodetic parameter estimation in coastal regions from satellite radar altimetry. Since then, Xiaoli has broadened the scope and breadth of her research considerably to now include satellite geodesy and satellite oceanography.

She has undertaken several research projects funded by the University of Newcastle, NSW Environmental Trust, and internationally by NASA, European Space Agency and French government Space Agency. The contribution to the projects is her specific skill of improving satellite altimetry data in coastal regions, monitoring the sea level around Australia, and investigating its influence on climate change.

Xiaoli has made a significant contribution to develop research infrastructure in the surveying group at the University of Newcastle. She has now a research team of three PhD students with research into coastal altimetry and its applications, sea level change, satellite altimetry waveform retracking, satellite geodesy in natural hazard mitigation, and marine gravity field. The team is also involved in research into the new generation of satellite SAR altimetry.

Research Expertise
Improvement of satellite radar altimetry data in coastal zones through developing altimetry waveform retracking algorithms. Development and use of satellite and in-situ observation techniques, models and methods for monitoring of sea level variability, ocean currents, climate, marine gravity field and natural hazards. Study of the new generation of satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar altimeters for monitoring of coastal and land-ice surfaces at small spatial scales.

Teaching Expertise
Since 2003 the following courses have been taught: Surveying 1 (SURV1110), Survey Computing (SURV2340), Geodesy (SURV3510), Analysis of Observation (SURV3350), Astronomy and Satellite Positioning (SURV4410), and Surveying Project (SURV4850). Deng has supervised to completion 2 PhD students, 1 of them as first supervisor. Deng is now first supervisor for 3 PhD students and co-supervisor to another one.

Administrative Expertise
The admin duties are mainly involved in Faculty and Surveying Group.
1) a coordinator for the Discipline research seminars between 2003 and 2004,
2) a member of Faculty Board between 2003 and early 2007 and in 2014,
3) University representative in Institution of Surveyors NSW Hunter Mining Group since 2005,
4) Surveying representative in UNISS.

Collaborations
Deng has created important research connections with leading researchers both nationally and internationally. She has collaborated with Cheinway Hwang (National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan), Richard Coleman (University of Tasmania), CK Shum (Ohio State University, USA), William Emery (University of Colorado, USA), Ken Ridgway (CSIRO Marine Research) and Paolo Cipollini (National Oceanography Centre, UK).

A new approach for improving the accuracy of altimetry-derived sea level anomalies (SLAs) near the coast is presented. Estimation of SLAs is optimized using optimal waveform retracking through a fuzzy multiple retracking system and the most appropriate detiding method. With the retracking system, fuzzy-retracked SLAs become available within 5 km of the coast; meanwhile it becomes more important to use pointwise tide modelling rather than state-of-the-art global tidal models, as the latter leave residual ocean tide signals in retracked SLAs. These improvements are demonstrated for Jason-2 waveforms in the area of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Comparing the retrieved SLAs with in situ tide gauge data from Townsville and Bundaberg stations showed that the SLAs from this study generally outperform those from conventional methods, demonstrating that adequate waveform retracking and detiding are equally important in bringing altimetry SLAs closer to the coast. © 2014 Taylor & Francis.
