Biography

Associate Professor Anthony (Tony) O'Brien joined the University of Newcastle as Senior Clinical Lead Research - Associate Professor Clinical Nursing, Nursing and Midwifery Research Centre (NMRC) in September 2011.  This is a joint appointment with Hunter New England Local Health District.  The role focuses on supporting nurses and midwives to conduct research in clinical practice to improve patient care. Tony is a Registered Nurse (mental health and general) with clinical experience in mental health community case management, acute mental health intake and assessment and aged care. Tony has held recent roles as an Registered Nurse Peninsula Health CLIPS team (2010), Honorary Mental Health Nurse (University Hospital, Singapore 2006-2008), RN8 (NCAHS 2009) and Clinical Nurse Consultant mental health (Mayne Health).

Collaboration

The primary research collaboration is between Hunter New England Health Local Health District (HNELHD), the University of Newcastle and the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) - Priority Research Centre, Health and Behaviour. This collaboration involves The University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Area Health Service with the Nursing and Midwifery Research Centre. The centre's work involves facilitating, establishing and building clinical research nursing and midwifery cultures in the Local Health District. The NMRC encourages nursing and midwifery clinicians to work with us to develop small and large projects from the clinical workplace to improve patient care.
