International project takes art research to the next level

The idea of artistic research has only existed in universities for 20 to 25 years. Although it's clearly no longer a new idea, from the perspective of Dr Sean Lowry, artists are still considered outsiders in academic institutions. The idea that art offers an effective vehicle with which to create or disseminate new knowledge still has relatively little traction within the broader academic community. Moreover, it remains a contested idea within the creative arts.

Sean Lowry

Lowry's international peer-reviewed exhibition model, Project Anywhere, is helping to create a new world for artistic research. One in which he hopes creative outputs will one day be seen as a legitimate research outcome potentially commensurate with a C1 academic journal.

In 2012 Lowry, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Creative Arts at the University of Newcastle (UON), saw a clear gap in what was available to artists to disseminate their research and initiated Project Anywhere.

Since it began the project has become an international collaboration, partnering with Parsons The New School for Design (US), NSCAD University (Canada), Anonymous (Australia), University of Lincoln (UK), University of Melbourne (Australia), and Auckland University of Technology (New Zealand).

Project Anywhere accepts proposals from artists and researchers working anywhere in the world. It is designed to suit artist academics seeking independent peer-validation and international dissemination for their research.

"Many still argue about the relative weight of creative and traditional research. All we can say is that when considered together they provide more," Lowry said.

In his own work research, Lowry finds it particularly interesting when something is almost not art. He maintains that art reveals something about the fuzzy borders of how we define and understand fictional or cultural constructions.

"Art is a fictional social construction. But it is a useful one, for it provides an effective vehicle for reflecting upon the nature of the many other socially constructed fictions that make up our understanding of the world," he said.

"Like other fictional constructions that we all take for granted, such as nations, art only exists to the extent that people agree that it does."

Project Anywhere is dedicated to promoting art at the outermost limits of location-specificity. To date, it has received proposals for projects in the Kalahari Desert, the Black Sea, online – and even for a project in inner Earth orbit on a space station!

"I was very excited to receive our first proposal for a project in space but our peer reviewers rejected it," Lowry said.

Even though he jokingly lists one of his goals for Project Anywhere to put the first Chinese artist in space, Lowry is proud to say he has no direct input into what is hosted.

Project Anywhere receives approximately 30 legitimate proposals from all over the world each year. All proposals get sent to at least four different blind peer reviewers, who then provide feedback and rank the proposals. The top three to five projects are then hosted on the Project Anywhere website each year. The decision as to how many projects are accepted is left to an editorial committee of internationally renowned artist academics from various institutions, including Dr Angela Philp from UON.

"I must say that first and foremost I am driven by my interest in art and in being an artist. Although I find the research culture in universities a very problematic place for artists, it is nonetheless a space where I am driven to test, refine and push my ideas."

"My interest in testing the outer limits of art as an ontological category is part of a broader tendency in recent years for art and performance to take place in unconventional locations, and for uncertain durations; to not necessarily take place in the kinds of places where we expect to encounter art."

"Perhaps, most importantly, Project Anywhere is a device for pointing towards artistic research that occurs beyond conventional exhibition spaces and programming durations."

Lowry not only hopes that Project Anywhere is the beginning of an artistic research culture commensurate with traditional research outcomes (such as the journal-based paradigm), he also sees it as a way of bypassing the figure of the curator as a cultural gatekeeper.

"Curators often stand between the artist and the public exhibition system. They have the power to determine what passes through and what doesn't. By using a blind peer-review model, we can bypass this relatively undemocratic process."

So far Project Anywhere has hosted 18 projects and held its first biennial conference hosted by Parsons The New School for Design in New York in 2014.

The next Project Anywhere conference will be held in November 2016 at Parsons The New School for Design in New York, where Lowry will also launch the parallel biennial publication ANYWHERE.

Biography

Dr. Sean Lowry
is a Sydney-based visual artist, musician and writer. Lowry holds a PhD in Visual Arts from The University of Sydney and is currently Convenor of Creative and Performing Arts in the School of Creative Arts at the University of Newcastle (Australia). Lowry has exhibited and performed extensively both nationally and internationally and his published writing appears in numerous international journals and edited volumes. His conceptually driven artistic practice employs strategies of concealed quotation, subliminal appropriation, erasure, remediation and intermedial expansion to explore the outermost limits of recognition and specificity in the world of a creative work. Lowry is also the founder and Executive Director of Project Anywhere (www.projectanywhere.net) a global exhibition model in which the role of curator is replaced with the type of peer review model typically endorsed by a refereed journal, and one half (with Ilmar Taimre) of the art/music/performance collaboration The Ghosts of Nothing  (www.ghostsofnothing.com). For more information and a full list of published works please visit: www.seanlowry.com

Areas of specialisation include conceptual and post-conceptual art, painting, expanded painting, performance art, intermedial practices, social practice, installation, sculpture, quotational practices after appropriation, digital and new media art, video installation, experimental sound and music, electronic music production, expanded exhibition formats, curatorial practice, creative arts pedagogy, the evaluation and legitimisation of artistic research, contemporary art criticism, art history and theory.  For more information: Sean Lowry art/music/text: www.seanlowry.com

Dr Lowry’s internationalised reputation for research and creative work is centred in contemporary visual art. His research interests extend to quotational practices after appropriation, aesthetics after conceptualism, artistic production after postmodernism, copyright in the digital age, curatorial practice, social practice, creative arts pedagogy, and the role of sound in visually centred cultural formations. In 2014 and 2016, Lowry was a Visiting Scholar/Artist at the School of Art, Media, and Technology at Parsons The New School for Design in New York.

Dr. Lowry is also the founder and Executive Director of Project Anywhere: Art At The Outermost Limits Of Location-Specificity www.projectanywhere.net
