Career Summary

Biography

My professional career includes practical experience as a Systems Engineer in the Hardware Development Group at the BHP, Newcastle. I regard consultation as a mechanism that is closely tied with both my teaching and research, as my teaching area at the University has always required me to keep close contact with external organisations and with developments in my discipline. To this end, I have worked with organisations as a consulting engineer and in contract analysis-programming positions at various times. My recent consultations include the Hunter Area Pathology Service and the Catholic Schools Office.

I have extensive teaching experience in non-tertiary organisations such as TAFE. I am a qualified secondary teacher and I was a committee member responsible for setting the 1997 and 1998 Higher School Certificate examinations for the 2 Unit General, the 2/3 Unit Common and the 3 Unit Computing Studies subjects.

Qualifications

Research expertise

My research is in the areas of Information and Knowledge-Based Systems development for business, and Information Systems education. I am particularly interested in the application of Information, Knowledge-Based and Decision Support Systems in medicine and health.

I am currently researching in decision support in health, specifically in the elicitation of tacit knowledge and the interpretation of clincial guidelines. I recently conducted research in pain management to determine the interpreted knowledge content Patient Controlled Analgesia guidelines for the Hunter Integrated Pain Service and I am currently investigating pain assessment in elderly Alzheimer patients with research staff from the John Hunter Hospital.

Administrative

Administrative expertise

I am currently the head of discipline for the IT group (9 full-time staff) within the School of Design, Communication and IT at the University of Newcastle.

I supervised casual programmers as principal researcher for a $50, 000 CUTSD grant in 1999-2000.

As a Systems Engineer at the BHP Newcastle (1981-1985) I supervised technicians, plant staff and contractors required for the installation and maintainence of computer systems.

Teaching

Teaching expertise

I lecturer in Information Systems to students in the Bachelor of Information Tecnology (BIT) and the Master of Information Technology (MIT) programmes. I have supervised the final-year Project courses in both programmes. I teach in the areas of computer programming, database design, systems analysis and design. I have developed courses in all of these areas as well as in health informatics and decision support systems. I have taught on-campus and on-line courses.

I was a part-time teacher in TAFE in many areas. These included teaching within the TAFE system in Post Trade Electronics courses, Electronics Engineering Certificate courses, Mining Mathematics and Engineering Drawing courses for mining, Computer Literacy courses and Certificate Entrance courses, as well as numerous community courses in the computing literacy area.

I was the principal investigator for 3 teaching grants. One was a 1998 CUTSD Grant for $50, 000. This was a national competitive teaching grant funded at the top level available under the scheme.
