Career Summary

Biography

Michael Chapman has been an academic at the University of Newcastle since 2009. Up until 2013, he was mainly involved in the Masters of Architecture, where he has taught widely in the first year and final year design courses. In 2014 he began teaching into the First Year design studio of the B.Des (arch) for the first time. He is currently the course co-ordinator for Architectural Design 1B (1220), as well as Architectural History and Theory 2 (2203) and works as a tutor and critic in Architectural Design 5B (6230). He is also currently the Head of Discipline (architecture), a supervisor to four post-graduate students and has won numerous awards for his teaching and research. His current research is focused primarily on the crossovers between art theory and architecture, with a particular interest in the historical avant-garde, early modernism and its ongoing influence. More recently, he has been concerned with the broader issues of industrialisation, industrial cities and the urban morphology of ports. In 2010 he was part of a team of three that was awarded an ARC Discovery Grant, worth over AUD$500 000 over four years and in 2012, he was awarded the Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship by the Board of Architects in NSW.  Michael's creative work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Venice Biennale, Federation Square, the State Library of NSW and the Museum of Melbourne. He is also a director of the architectural practice hrmphrdt which focusses on small scale architectural projects and insertions.
