Biography

Dr Rubin was awarded an MSc from the London School of Economics in 1994 and a PhD from Cardiff University, UK in 2000. He worked as a lecturer at Cardiff University from 1999-2001 and joined the University of Newcastle in 2001, where he is currently a senior lecturer in the School of Psychology. The University of Newcastle is ranked 1st in Australia and 28th globally among the world’s top 100 universities that are under 50 years old (Times Higher Education World University Rankings, 2013-2014). The School of Psychology is ranked in the top 4 of 41 psychology departments in Australia based on its research output (Excellence in Research Australia, 2012).

Dr Rubin has won several awards for his teaching, including the University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor’s (2011) Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, and the Australian Government’s Office for Teaching and Learning (2013) Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.

Dr Rubin has authored 37 major research publications, including 33 journal articles, 2 book chapters, and 2 published conference papers. Over half of his journal articles are published in journals that are ranked in the top third of their field based on their impact factor. His work has been cited over 1,900 times, and he is ranked in the top 20% of social psychologists based on his publication impact (career-stage e-index compared with 611 North American social psychologists; Nosek et al., 2010).

Dr Rubin’s research focuses on social group processes, including social identity, stereotyping, prejudice, and social exclusion. In the area of social identity, he has published several highly-cited articles that defend social identity theory against its critics and call for more sophisticated tests of its core hypotheses. In the area of stereotyping, he has identified new processes that explain why people perceive members of social groups to be “all the same.” His work on prejudice has been funded by two Discovery Project grants from the Australian Research Council. In the first project, he identified cognitive and motivational factors that predict prejudice against “category-inconsistent” people such as migrants and counterstereotypical individuals (Rubin, Paolini, & Crisp, 2005-2007). In the second project, he worked with lead investigator Dr Stefania Paolini to show that negative encounters with out-group members increase prejudice more than positive encounters decrease prejudice (Paolini, Harwood, & Rubin, 2007-2010). Dr Rubin’s recent research is based in the area of social exclusion. Here, he has provided meta-analytic evidence that working-class students are less integrated at university than middle-class students, he has identified personality variables that predict migrants’ social exclusion, and he has shown that the need for self-esteem motivates people to exclude out-group members from their in-group.

He has conducted a meta-analysis using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis, and he uses Hayes' (2013) PROCESS software to conduct moderation and mediation analyses.

Teaching expertise

Dr Rubin has a total of 20 years of teaching experience at Cardiff University, UK, and the University of Newcastle, Australia. He has taught and co-ordinated small and large undergraduate courses from first-year through to fourth-year. He has supervised 59 final year student projects and three PhD students to completion. He is currently supervising two PhD students (.80 & .30 supervision loading), one Professional Doctorate student (.20), and two Masters students (.20 & .30).

Dr Rubin’s teaching topics relate to social psychology and include areas such as attitudes, the self, social influence, group processes, intergroup conflict, and cross-cultural social psychology. Based on student feedback surveys, Dr Rubin’s students regard him as a well-organized teacher who explains things clearly, makes good use of examples and illustrations, and provides well-structured lecture and course material.

Dr Rubin is also an innovative teacher. He has developed an award-winning collection of online guides that explain academic skills in psychology. During 2013 and 2014, he also presented a two-hour seminar titled “Introduction to Academic Publishing: A Seminar for Postgraduate Students” to students at four national and international universities, including the University of Newcastle, Australia, the University of Canberra, the University of Padova, Italy, and the University of Sheffield, UK.
