Career Summary

Biography

Dr. Ong graduated in 2012 with a PhD in Medical Biochemistry focusing on stress biology, neurodegeneration, inflammation and tyrosine hydroxylase regulation in catecholaminergic cells in vivo. He undertook postdoctoral training to develop novel strategies for combating parkinsonism neurodegeneration from 2012 to 2014 and recently joined the Translational Brain Repair and Rehabilitation Research Group of A/Prof Rohan Walker and Prof Michael Nilsson to evaluate a variety of innovative approaches to target stroke rehabilitation and brain recovery.

 

He has produced 13 peer reviewed publications and 24 conference publications in just three years from graduating with his PhD. He has 130 citations and H-index of 7. He has been the recipient of a number of awards and have grant success from national and international organizations. Since 2010, he has received 8 travel grants to attend and present his work at national and international conferences. In 2015, he received Young Investigator Travel Program from IBRO to undergo training and foster ongoing collaboration in Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He has developed a very broad range of technical skills and now possess expertise in the areas of: preclinical animal modellings, processing clinical human samples, cell culture, biochemistry techniques and biological imaging has been recognised by national and international colleagues. His work in this space has already garnered international attention. For instance, he has been invited to present his work internationally at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (2015) and The 12th Meeting of The Asia Pacific Society for Neurochemistry, Taiwan (2014). He is also invited as guest reviewer for internationally peer reviewed journals (Journal of Neurochemistry and Neurochemistry International). Aside from research, he is committed to scientific advocacy and the promoting of the achievements of young local researchers. He is recently elected as the Deputy Newcastle Convenor of the Australian Society for Medical Research and ECR representative for the School of Biomedical Science and Pharmacy Research Committee.
