Biography

Juan-Carlos Agüero was born in Osorno, Chile. He obtained the professional title of Ingeniero civil electrónico and a Master of engineering from the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (Chile) in 2000, and a PhD from The University of Newcastle (Australia) in 2006. He gained industrial experience from 1997 to 1998 in the copper mining industry at El Teniente, Codelco (Chile). He is currently working as a Research Academic at The University of Newcastle (Australia). His research interests include System Identification, Control and Statistical Signal Processing.

My research interests include System Identification, Control, and Statistical Signal Processing. Some of the papers I have written are in the following subareas: Errors in Variables, Experiment Design, Closed loop identification, Identification of state space models, System identification for control, Identification using frequency domain data.

In this paper, we show how heterogeneous bidirectional vehicle strings can be modelled as port-Hamiltonian systems. Analysis of stability and string stability within this framework is straightforward and leads to a better understanding of the underlying problem. Nonlinear local control and additional integral action is introduced to design a suitable control law guaranteeing l2 string stability of the system with respect to bounded disturbances.

This paper presents an identification scheme for sparse FIR systems with quantised data. We consider a general quantisation scheme, which includes the commonly deployed static quantiser as a special case. To tackle the sparsity issue, we utilise a Bayesian approach, where an l1 a priori distribution for the parameters is used as a mechanism to promote sparsity. The general framework used to solve the problem is maximum likelihood (ML). The ML problem is solved by using a generalised expectation maximisation algorithm. © 2013 Taylor & Francis.

In this paper, we address channel-impulse response (CIR) estimation in multicarrier systems with phase distortion, namely, phase noise (PHN) and carrier frequency offset (CFO). The estimation problem also considers the joint estimation of the channel noise variance, CFO, and PHN bandwidth. We develop a general state-space model for multicarrier systems, separating the complex signals into their real and imaginary parts. This provides a valid framework for any modulation scheme (proper or improper). We use the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm to solve the maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation problem. Our approach exploits the linear and Gaussian structure associated with the transmitted signal. Due to the nonlinear nature of the PHN, sequential Monte Carlo (MC) techniques are considered. Our analysis includes general expressions under different training scenarios.We show, via simulation, the impact of PHN bandwidth estimation on overall parameter estimation, and we study the impact of different training levels. In addition, we consider the accuracy of the parameter estimates, providing expressions for the Fisher information matrix (FIM) and focusing on the estimation accuracy of the PHN bandwidth. © 2012 IEEE.

There exists a substantial literature dealing with the problem of errors-in- variables identification. It is known, for example, that there is an equivalence class of models that give compatible descriptions of the input-output data. in the current paper, we impose a mild restriction so as to avoid certain singular possibilities. This leads to a parameterization of the equivalence class of models via a single real parameter. We then use this result to show that there exists a model which is optimal in the sense that minimizes the maximal weighted infinity norm of the error between the chosen model and all members of the equivalence class. This model is unique and is independent of the weighting function used in the infinity norm. It is thus the natural choice to be used in applications such as robust control. The result is also compared with more conventional estimates provided by prediction error methods. Copyright © 2005 IFAC.

Multivariable system identification is known to be a difficult problem. In part, this is due to the fact that, in general, the likelihood function is non-convex. The most commonly used class of procedures for off-line identification of multivariable systems is the method commonly known as Sub-Space. These methods avoid the non-convexity issue by using a multi-step procedure which includes a singular value decomposition. Unfortunately, it is not easy to develop a recursive form of these Sub-space algorithms due to the singular value decomposition step. Here, we borrow ideas from the Sub-space methodologies to develop a novel recursive algorithm. We assume that the Kronecker invariants for the system are known. We also illustrate the performance of the algorithm via a simple example.

In this paper, the instrumental variable (IV) and expectation-maximization (EM) methods are combined to identify a continuous-time (CT) transfer function model from non-uniformly sampled data obtained from a closed-loop system. A simple version of Box-Jenkins (BJ) model is considered, where the noise process is parameterized as a CT autoregressive (CAR) model. The advantage of considering CT models is to get a invariant solution while handling non-uniformly sampled data. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by a simulation example.

In this paper we propose a novel quadratic model predictive control technique that constrains the number of active inputs at each control horizon instant. This problem is known as sparse control. We use an iterative convex optimization procedure to solve the corresponding optimization problem subject to sparsity constraints defined by means of the l0-norm. We also derive a sufficient condition on the minimum number of active of inputs that guarantees the exponential stability of the closed-loop system. A simulation example illustrates the benefits of the control design method proposed in the paper.

This paper considers the problem of continuous-time model identification from non-uniformly sampled input-output data, having the measured output corrupted by colored noise. We concentrate on the continuous-time transfer function model identification. A Box-Jenkins model structure is used to describe the system, thus providing independent parameterizations for the plant and the noise. Monte Carlo simulation analysis is also used to illustrate the properties of the proposed estimation method.
