Jeff Julian - Bringing The Future Closer
As innovation drives significant advancements in the way we live, creativity and the creative industries have moved from being just a part of the process to taking a leadership role. Award winning and world-renowned designer and futurist, Jeff Julian, has joined the University of Newcastle as Director of Creative Innovation to spearhead a collaborative culture, both within the University and the Hunter region.
Jeff's years of experience with companies including Apple, Oakley, Samsung, BMW Audi, Dreamworks SKG, Sony, Universal Studios, Warner Bros and Disney have provided him with a unique insight into the world's leading innovators. Unlike other futurists who study trends and research clues to anticipate how we may live in the future, Jeff has spent his vast career working with leading organisations to make innovations happen.
"Universities have an amazing depth of knowledge but, as large institutions, they tend to function as silos, being detached and not exploiting all of the collaborative opportunities that exist. This leads to missed opportunities and increases the divide between industry and academia. Traditional institutions often stifle creativity because creativity, by its very nature, is collaborative."
"By encouraging different disciplines to work together on real world problems, truly lateral thinking comes into play and can spark amazing solutions and results. That's how great organisations can change the world," said Jeff.
Part of that master plan includes hosting the Disruptive Innovation Works (DIW) series of talks. The DIW talks bring some of the world's best innovation leaders to Newcastle to inspire, generate new ideas and create fresh opportunities in the wider community.
"It's really important that we're always seeking to create meaning as the end goal with innovation. Whether it's making University programs relevant to a changing world, connecting with corporate partners or driving our research hubs with cross-disciplinary collaboration, we always have that bigger picture in mind," said Jeff.
"As we have entered the new age of collaboration, our approach to education is evolving. It is not about disrupting the norm for the sake of change, but about adding a cross-disciplinary culture that drives and improves our existing strengths while embracing the future."

Jeffrey Julian is the Director of Creative Innovation at the University of Newcastle, Australia.
Jeff is a renowned designer and creative-futurist who works with a global team of researchers, innovators and educational institutions to nurture creativity. He is highly regarded in the design, film and advertising industries and has received multiple awards, including six Gold CLIO'S and a V.E.S. (Visual Effects Society) Award for Best Art Direction. Jeff has registered numerous patents for products as diverse as prosthetic limbs to eyewear.
His career began working with various high profile companies including BMW / Designworks, Gucci, Rover, Rolls-Royce and Siemens. A highly successful appointment at Oakley resulted in several notable patents.
This visionary work quickly attracted the attention of Hollywood, notably Steven Spielberg who invited Jeff to be a part of a team of futurists for the film Minority Report. This provided a springboard for the next ten years to work as a concept designer and art director with Hollywood’s 'A-List', including Ridley Scott, the Wachowski brothers, David Fincher, Brian Singer, Warner Brothers, Dreamworks SKG, Digital Domain, Paramount Studios, Universal, Sony and George Lucas’s Industrial Light and Magic.
In addition to his film work, Jeff is equally recognised for developing content and intellectual property for numerous clients including Apple, American Express, Adidas, Nike, BMW, Rolls Royce, Audi, Ford, and Ogilvy & Mather.
In recent years, Jeff has provided consulting services and travelled the world as a keynote speaker and panelist for organisations as diverse as NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, British Aerospace, Samsung, Hyundai and Disney on topics ranging from Research and Innovation, the Environment, Medicine, Technology, Defense and Strategy. He is a co-founder of several innovative and disruptive start-ups in Australia.
Jeff won a full scholarship from Samsung and Toyota to attend the prestigious Art Centre College of Design in Pasadena California where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree with Honors in Industrial Design in 1999.As Director of Creative Innovation at UON, Jeff works on numerous projects spanning the various Faculties and Divisions of the University. Jeff also regularly presents guest lectures to classes at the University. Some of Jeff’s recent projects include:
China Australia Millennial Project (CAMP)
Jeff led the University of Newcastle’s ThinkTank at the CAMP Summit that was held in Sydney in June 2015.
The China Australia Millennial Project, CAMP, is a world-first project uniting top young leaders (aged 18-35) from China with their Australian peers for a bilateral business incubator across a broad range of industries, peaking in a 5-day summit during the Vivid Ideas festival in Sydney.
Disruptive Innovation Works
Disruptive Innovation Works is a lecture series presented by unconventional thinkers making a practical difference in their chosen fields. Presented by Jeff Julian, Director of Creative Innovation, the DIW lectures are a practical way to learn from, and be inspired by, world-class pioneers of our day. Past presenters have included:
- Chris Buck, the Academy Award winning director of the Disney phenomenon – Frozen. Chris delivered two inspirational talks on behalf of the University of Newcastle. As a UON Visiting Fellow, Chris shared the experiences of his stellar 40-year career as an animator, screenwriter and director where he has worked on many animated classics including Tarzan, Surf's Up, Pocahontas, The Little Mermaid and Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
- Cate McQuillen, the creator of the multi award-winning TV children's program dirtgirlworld is mobilising the next generation to get outside and get grubby. Cate's lecture 'Little Big Noise: Disruption from the middle of nowhere' was delivered in March 2014.
- Greg Downing, the Hollywood special effects guru. Greg showcased the latest in creative imaging and visual effects techniques at the first Disruptive Innovation Works lecture in February 2014. Greg is the Founder of xRez Studio in California. He is a pioneer of extreme resolution gigapixel photography and innovator of new technologies such as 3D photogrammetry, laser scanning, terrain modelling and multi-spectral imaging.
