Career Summary

Biography

Dr Welsh completed a PhD in the area of system identification in 2004. Specifically, his PhD thesis studied ill-conditioning that arises in numerous aspects of system identification. He also proposed several novel techniques and methods to avoid the problems that are associated with this ill-conditioning.He has over ten years of experience as an engineer working in industry. This work focused on control engineering. Frequently in this work, he used system identification methods to obtain appropriate models. This dual background gives Dr Welsh an important perspective of systems research. In particular, his goal is to emphasize strong theoretical contributions which have genuine practical relevance.

Research Expertise
I have a strong interest in both fundamental and applied research in the areas of control system design and system identification. More recently, I have become involved with research on experiment design for dynamic systems.

Teaching Expertise
My teaching experience covers the areas of control systems, system identification, electronics and electrical circuit theory.

Administrative Expertise
I'm currently the Graduate Studies Adviser for the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. As well as this I am a member of several committees within the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment. These include the Marketing Committee, Industry Advisory Board Secretary, UNISS representative for Electrical Engineering and the Electrical Engineering Equipment Committee. Also I'm a member of the NSW HSC examination committee for Engineering Studies.

An accurate transformer model is an important tool for use in the study of power transformers. However, a manufacturer's proprietary restrictions will generally make access to the detailed design specifications of a transformer difficult. Therefore, in order to construct a physically representative transformer model, it is often necessary to estimate the model parameters. One approach is to fit the model to data obtained from tests, such as frequency-response analysis. However, during the process of fitting a model to a data set, it is critical that the estimated parameters appropriately represent the transformer under test. An estimator that is not constrained can converge on a parameter set which may satisfy the objective function but is not physically representative of the transformer. It is therefore important to constrain the model parameters. The aim of this paper is to formulate a methodology to obtain initial estimates and constraints for several fundamental transformer parameters. To demonstrate applicability, the initial parameter estimates and constraints are applied to a range of distribution transformers of varying age and manufacture, ranging in size from 200 kVA to 18 MVA. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

Research on human posture control reveals that proprioception is a crucial sense for the control of stance. In particular, proprioceptive cues in the ankle, hips, and trunk trigger automatic postural responses to perturbations. Generally, the robotics literature discusses the use of the Zero Moment Point to stabilise stance. Humans can not calculate this point from proprioceptive cues, instead joint velocity information is used. This paper proposes the use of proprioception on a humanoid robot, where joint velocities are used directly to detect and determine the direction of a perturbation during quiet stance. A weighted Manhattan norm of the joint velocity vector is used for perturbation detection and a Support Vector Machine is used to classify a perturbation as belonging to a set of directions and locations. On application to a 23 degree of freedom humanoid the average detection time is 120ms. The direction is classified with 100% accuracy and the location is classified with 99.9% accuracy. The majority of proprioceptive information was provided by the upper body, in particular, the shoulders. © 2010 IFAC.
