Professor Goodwin is a member of the Centre for Complex Dynamic Systems and Control led by Professor Richard Middleton.

Complex systems are central to the way we live. They control energy generation and distribution, safety and security systems, telecommunications, transport, manufacturing processes and many things a contemporary community needs to function.

The Centre for Dynamic Systems and Control is an internationally recognised research group that brings together more than 100 staff and students. It is at the forefront of developing optimisation and signal processing techniques that improve the performance of industrial processes.

Since its establishment in 2003, the centre has given life to a host of fundamental research achievements and forged significant industry collaborations around the world.

Some of its high-profile projects have included: devising signal processing techniques and software for electromagnetic mineral exploration for BHP Billiton; developing a roll stabilisation system used in Australian Customs vessels; improving the efficiency of mobile broadband telecommunications; cutting-edge work in computer storage for IBM Zurich and work on innovative approaches to Type 1 diabetes treatment.

Laureate Professor Graham Goodwin says the centre is rated among the top control and automation research groups in the world, with research projects across Asia, North and South America, Europe, the UK and Scandinavia. Its researchers are highly cited and have achieved more than 1,000 publications in the past seven years.

His own reputation is as esteemed as any in the field. The unassuming Professor in Electrical Engineering, who has been at the University for 40 years, has been honoured with the highest professional awards. He has received the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Control Systems Field Award (the top award in this field in the world), the 2010 Nordic Process Control Award, the 2011 Asian Control Education Award and the 2013 ASME Rufus Oldenburger Award.

The centre is a multidisciplinary environment, which has fostered highly productive collaborations between researchers from diverse fields, including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics and statistics. Projects run the gamut from pure research to applied.

While the scope of research undertaken in the centre is wide, Goodwin says telecommunications provides a good case study, illustrating the complex concepts of control in a scenario most people can comprehend.

The team is working with the Swedish company Ericsson AB, under an Australian Research Council Linkage Project, to improve the performance of the mobile broadband system, a growing imperative with more than four billion mobile phones worldwide and nearly 300 billion emails sent each day.

Mobile phone networks consist of adjoining cells, each with a radius of several kilometres.

"In a given cell at any time there might be between 10 and 100 people with phones or computers trying to send data and make calls. If you let them all go at once it would be a babble, and nothing would get through," Professor Goodwin explains.

"The system has a scheduler that determines which of the users can send data at any one time. The optimisation problem we are working on is how to maximise the amount of data that is transmitted but still ensure that the system is equitable – you can't allow one person to miss out because they are sitting on the outskirts of the cell."

In most cases, users of the system are unaware that this priority allocation is taking place because delays are splitsecond. Where it becomes obvious is when the system is not working efficiently – such as when a user unsuccessfully attempts to send a large data file.

"If the system is overcrowded, it becomes inefficient to the point where things don't go through at all," Goodwin says. "So we are developing an improved system that will prevent a collapse and better regulate the flow of data."

Goodwin and other team members have been working with Ericsson AB, researching algorithmic optimisation to be used in software that improves the efficiency of the control system.

It is typical, he says, of the big-picture research that has enhanced the reputation of the centre, and the University, around the world.

Recent work includes new treatment strategies for Type 1 diabetes patients, which isbeing carried out as part of the Hunter New England Diabetes Research Network.

"We have many large, internationally visible projects that are of global importance, which is what makes our research centre stand out," Goodwin says.

Biography

Graham Goodwin graduated from the University of New South Wales with B.Sc. (Physics) 1965, B.E. Honours I (Electrical Engineering) 1967 and Ph.D. 1971. In 2010 he was awarded the IEEE Control Systems Field Award and in 2013 he received the Rufus T. Oldenburger Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Other international awards include the 1999 IEEE Control Systems Society Hendrik Bode Lecture Prize, a Best Paper award by IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, a Best Paper award by Asian Journal of Control, and two Best Engineering Text Book awards from the International Federation of Automatic Control in (1984 and 2005). He received the 2008 Quazza Medal from the International Federation of Automatic Control, the 2010 Nordic Process Control Award, the 2011 Asian Control Association Wook Hyun Kwon Education Award and the Newcastle Innovation 2014 Excellence in Innovation Award. He is a Fellow of IEEE; an Honorary Fellow of Institute of Engineers, Australia; a Fellow of the International Federation of Automatic Control, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science; a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology, Science and Engineering; a Member of the International Statistical Institute; a Fellow of the Royal Society, London and a Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He holds Honorary Doctorates from Lund Institute of Technology, Sweden and the Technion Israel. He is the co-author of nine books, four edited books, 218 international journal papers and 330 refereed international conference papers. He has successfully supervised 38 Ph.D. students. These hold senior positions in major international universities and industry. He has presented 60 Keynote Addresses at major international conferences. Graham is a Distinguished Professor at Harbin Institute of Technology (China), Northwestern University (China), Zhengzhou University (China) and Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (Chile). He holds several research grants covering diverse areas including Power Electronics, 3G and 4G Mobile Communications, Ambulance Scheduling, and Artificial Pancreas development. He holds 16 International Patents covering rolling mill technology, telecommunications, mine planning and mineral exploration.

My research covers a broad spectrum of system science and engineering. One indicator of the breadth of topics is the titles of 9 research monographs that I have authored. © 1982-2012 IEEE.Model predictive control (MPC) has been widely advocated as a design strategy for many aspects of industrial electronics. The methodology has been strongly promoted by some researchers but has also attracted criticism from others. In this context, the purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we show that many existing and popular control strategies, including finite set MPC and linear controllers [proportional integral, proportional resonant (PR)], can be viewed as special cases of MPC. Second, we show that the predictive control framework allows one to embellish these classical control architectures with novel features and to design new and advanced control architectures to address various challenges posed by power electronics applications. The findings of the paper are supported by a practical example of designing of a novel form of PR controller with superior tracking performance and delay compensation, confirmed via simulation and experiments.

Due to the inherent switched nature of the inverter waveforms harmonic distortion is an issue. Additionally, the switching patterns are perturbed by unavoidable switching delays. Amongst those, nonlinear and load-dependent switching delays (known as inverter dead-time delays) are the most difficult to compensate. In this paper, we propose a new approach to delay compensation and harmonic suppression in inverter voltage. The proposed approach is based on variable prediction horizon nonlinear model predictive control.

This is true to both the downlink (between a control base station and actuators) and the uplink (between the sensors and base station). Here, we present a strategy aimed at this problem based on a singular value decomposition of the Hessian of the quadratic performance index generally considered in Model Predictive Control. The singular vectors are employed to generate an orthonormal basis function expansion of the unconstrained solution to the finite horizon optimal control problem. These are preloaded into each actuator and each sensor. On the downlink, the actuators are informed, in real-time, about which basis functions they should use. On the uplink, after a 'burn in period', the sensors need only communicate when their response departs from that pre-calculated for the given basis functions. We show that this strategy facilitates communication in both the downlink and uplink in a cost-effective fashion. We also show that the strategy can be modified so that input constraints are satisfied. We illustrate the proposed results by applying them to a simulation of the cross direction control of a paper machine. Potential extensions and other applications of the proposed strategy are also discussed.

This paper presents an identification scheme for sparse FIR systems with quantised data. We consider a general quantisation scheme, which includes the commonly deployed static quantiser as a special case. To tackle the sparsity issue, we utilise a Bayesian approach, where an l1 a priori distribution for the parameters is used as a mechanism to promote sparsity. The general framework used to solve the problem is maximum likelihood (ML). The ML problem is solved by using a generalised expectation maximisation algorithm. © 2013 Taylor & Francis.

This paper addresses the following problem in networked control: "If a control law is implemented over a channel that supports a certain fixed bit rate what is the best choice for the control update rate and, consequently, the number of bits carried in each sample?" A restricted architecture in which linear filters are used for the encoder/decoder is considered and a quantizer with linear feedback is deployed. Subject to these restrictions, a procedure for designing the controller and associated filters is presented. These filters are then deployed to choose the best number of bits per control update. It is shown, subject to the above restrictions, that it is generally best to use one bit per sample, in which case, the control update rate is equal to the bit rate. Our analysis has two points of departure from contemporary literature in this area. Firstly, we focus on bits per unit time, as opposed to bits per sample. Secondly we use a fixed number of bits in every time period as opposed to an average bit rate. © 2014.

In spite of its easy implementation, ability to handle constraints and nonlinearities, etc.; model predictive control (MPC) does have drawbacks including tuning difficulties. In this paper, we propose a refinement to the basic MPC strategy by incorporating a tuning parameter such that one can move smoothly from an existing controller to a new MPC strategy. Each change of this tuning parameter leads to a new stabilising control law, therefore, allowing one to gradually move from an existing control law to a new and better one. For the infinite horizon case without constraints and for the general case with state and input constraints, stability results are established. We also examine the practical applicability of the proposed approach by employing it in the nominal prediction model of the tube-based output feedback robust MPC method. The merits of the proposed method are illustrated by examples. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we address channel-impulse response (CIR) estimation in multicarrier systems with phase distortion, namely, phase noise (PHN) and carrier frequency offset (CFO). The estimation problem also considers the joint estimation of the channel noise variance, CFO, and PHN bandwidth. We develop a general state-space model for multicarrier systems, separating the complex signals into their real and imaginary parts. This provides a valid framework for any modulation scheme (proper or improper). We use the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm to solve the maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation problem. Our approach exploits the linear and Gaussian structure associated with the transmitted signal. Due to the nonlinear nature of the PHN, sequential Monte Carlo (MC) techniques are considered. Our analysis includes general expressions under different training scenarios.We show, via simulation, the impact of PHN bandwidth estimation on overall parameter estimation, and we study the impact of different training levels. In addition, we consider the accuracy of the parameter estimates, providing expressions for the Fisher information matrix (FIM) and focusing on the estimation accuracy of the PHN bandwidth. © 2012 IEEE.

Induction Heating Furnaces are used extensively in industry. The basic principle is that induced eddy currents are used to heat a ferromagnetic material as it passes through a series of coils. Because of the importance of such systems, there has been on-going interest in their design and operation. Past work includes model development from physical principles and optimal design of operational practices. However, previous work has invariably been based on open-loop strategies. Our work is aimed at the design of a closed-loop control strategy incorporating feedback from the available measurements. This paper reports initial work including model development and calibration together with preliminary control system design. There exists a substantial literature dealing with the problem of errors-in- variables identification. It is known, for example, that there is an equivalence class of models that give compatible descriptions of the input-output data. in the current paper, we impose a mild restriction so as to avoid certain singular possibilities. This leads to a parameterization of the equivalence class of models via a single real parameter. We then use this result to show that there exists a model which is optimal in the sense that minimizes the maximal weighted infinity norm of the error between the chosen model and all members of the equivalence class. This model is unique and is independent of the weighting function used in the infinity norm. It is thus the natural choice to be used in applications such as robust control. The result is also compared with more conventional estimates provided by prediction error methods. Copyright © 2005 IFAC.

Abstract. In time series analysis of data sequences, the estimation of the parameters of an identified autoregressive moving-average (ARMA) model is a well-known and straightforward exercise. However, if the parameters of the model are periodic (i.e. a periodic ARMA (PARMA) model) then the estimation process becomes more difficult. This paper describes an on-line parameter estimation technique, based on methods from automatic control, which is demonstrated to provide consistent estimates of PARMA model parameters. The identification of an undermodeled transfer function from input-output data is stated as a constrained optimization problem. The constraints determine the identification procedure, the residual error and whether on average the magnitude of the frequency response is L2-overbiased, L2-underbiased or L2-unbiased, as measured by a certain weighted L2-bias integral. The L2-unbiased solutions are linear combinations of L2-overbiased and L2-underbiased solutions, which are precisely the classical least squares estimates. They can be obtained from the solution of certain eigenvalue problems. © 1994.

This paper investigates low to utilize data to predict a robust performance bandwidth for model-based controllers. The procedures relies on a stochastic embedding approach, in which unmodelled dynamics are viewed as the realization of a stochastic process in the frequency domain. This enhances estimation of a nominal model by an associated model error quantification. It is shown how this joint information can be used to predict a bandwidth of robust performance. For cases where appropriate model-and controller-order are not known a priori, an iterative identification/controller design procedure emerges.

There are three key elements that iterative estimation/controller design techniques require: a closed loop identification procedure to yield an improved model, an uncertainty quantification procedure that captures the validity range of the new model, and a design procedure that utilizes both the model and its uncertainty to generate an improved controller. This paper reports a novel iterative procedure based on estimation of multiplicative increments to generate the successive models, stochastic embedding for quantifying the associated uncertainties and IMC for controller design. The procedure is illustrated on a laboratory process.

This paper describes a case study of advanced control in continuous bloom casting. The study employed nonlinear identification techniques to improve physical understanding of the process. As a consequence, the primary cause of control difficulties in the existing design was found to be slip-stick friction in the hydraulic slide gate valve. A new controller was then designed to compensate for this key nonlinear effect. The new control strategy reduced the magnitude of the previously observed oscillations on the mould level by a factor of ten to one. Subsequent analysis revealed a considerable economic impact resulting in potential savings of many hundreds of thousands of dollars.

This paper addresses the problem of providing bounds on estimated plant frequency responses in a form suitable for robust control design. Our approach is to consider the undermodelling as a particular realisation of a random variable and to derive bounds based on averages over all possible noise realisations and over all possible undermodelling realisations. We critically examine the performance of these bounds relative to those that would be obtained by fitting a high order model to the data and then truncating to a low order model. We also show that the parameter in the distribution for the undermodelling can be estimated from the data analagously to the way measurement noise variance is estimated from prediction errors. We propose several new estimators and examine their finite data and asymptotic properties.

The demand for wider, thinner rolled steel has led to an increasing interest in the control of the strip 'shape'. Mechanisms for controlling shape include roll bending, roll tilt (or mill steer) and spray pattern control. This paper will principally focus on an analysis of the spray control system and the associated interaction between adjacent zones. This paper describes a new approach to shape control, a mathematical model is derived for the dynamic thermal expansion of the rolls of the a tandem cold rolling mill. The model structure has been specifically designed to facilitate control studies. The system is highly non-linear but the model suggests how the system can be linearized by an appropriate input signal transformation. The linearized system then represents a coupled multi-input multi-output dynamical system linking the cooling water sprays to the measured exit strip shape. This linearized model leads to a dynamical decoupling procedure which reduces the system to a set of single-input single-output control systems. Apart from the application to shape control, the method proposed here has more general applicability since the same kind of problem arises in a variety of cross-machine problems.

It is shown that the problem of quantifying the effect of model uncertainty on estimation has a simple and intuitively appealing solution when the problem is set up in a Bayesian framework. The results indicate that in the case of Gaussian prior distributions, the optimal estimator, accounting for undermodeling, is particularly straightforward. In the non-Gaussian case, the estimator provides the best linear unbiased estimate. In both cases, the method gives a quantification of the effect of noise and undermodeling on the estimates. The results presented are believed to be of considerable importance in estimation since undermodeling is a generic problem and the results seem to have widespread application. For example, they seem to offer a mechanism for combining robust control and adaptive control. They also have impact on other areas, such as fault detection and diagnosis and experimental design.

This paper addresses the problem of time delay modelling using rational approximations. Two classes of models are discussed based on all-pole and all-pass transfer functions. A detailed analysis is carried out comparing the respective merits of these approximate models. The estimation of the parameters in these models is investigated and the associated control design problem using rational models for the delay is studied. Simulation results are presented which support the theoretical analysis.

A key objective will be to ensure that the discrete time results are formulated in such a way that they are consistent with the corresponding continuous time results when fast sampling is used. Some issues in stochastic systems theory with particular emphasis on cases when fast sampling is used are examined. By fast sampling we mean that the sampling frequency, f s, should be greater than the bandwidth of any signal of interest.

This paper describes an experimental investigation of adaptive control applied to a coupled tank apparatus. The study is intended to explore several practical considerations which arise in the application of adaptive control to realistic processes. In the experiments, the apparatus was configured so as to have several difficulties found in practical systems, including unmodelled time delay, unmodelled high-frequency lag and unmodelled non-linearities. These features are studied both theoretically and experimentally. The adaptive controller is shown to perform satisfactorily in the presence of these practical difficulties. Also a comparison with other strategies for control system design is given.

This paper presents a new approach to the understanding and treatment of the effects of undermodelling in the estimation of models for dynamical systems. There already exists a substantial body of knowledge dealing with the implications of undermodelling on robust control system design. However, the corresponding problem for model estimation has received only scant attention. This paper presents a general conceptual and philosophical framework which adds the important dimension of undermodelling to the estimation problem. The philosophy of the approach is to embed the nominal model structure into a larger class of models which includes a generic characterization of undermodelling. This broader perspective allows the effects of limited model complexity on estimation to be quantified.

A method to quantify uncertainty due to undermodeling is presented. The unmodeled dynamics are embedded in a general class of systems that is defined using realistic a priori information. This embedding principle can be formalized in several different ways; the one presented involves the setting of a stochastic framework, where the unmodeled dynamics are taken to be a particular realization of a stochastic embedding process. A priori knowledge is used to choose suitable statistics for this process. This approach allows quantification of the effect of the modeling errors on the estimated transfer function in the frequency domain. The principal advantage of this approach is that it allows robust and adaptive control to be considered within the same conceptual framework.

An application of an adaptive control scheme to the problem of controlling fluid level in a pair of coupled tanks is presented. The study is intended to explore several practical issues arising in the use of adaptive control to realistic processes. The controlled system exhibits different time constants for filling and emptying as well as unmodeled static nonlinearity, time delay, high-frequency lag, and D.C. offset. The control scheme has a proportional-integral (PI) structure and is designed using a certainty-equivalence form of pole assignment. The adaptive controller is shown to perform satisfactorily in the presence of these practical difficulties and has characteristics which are superior to those obtained from a well-tuned proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller.

Robustness is achieved by running the estimators for the loops in parallel with dead-zone functions which take account of the interactions. The essential stability condition is that a certain matrix be an M-matrix. This restricts the interactions to be small relative to the stability of each loop.

The minimal model is used for adaptive pole placement incorporating the internal model principle. The closed-loop system is shown to reject the disturbances asymptotically. A number of simulated examples are given to demonstrate the performance of the algorithm.

Adaptive control has been a topic of interest to control engineers for at least four decades. However, initial attempts to use these methods in practice were largely unsuccessful due to inadequate computer hardware and to lack of a suitable supporting theory. In recent years this situation has changed somewhat due to advances in microprocessor technology and due to the development of a better theoretical understanding of adaptive control. The aim of this paper will be to survey some of the recent results in digital adaptive control and to relate them to practical design issues where possible.

This paper describes an improved controller design for a conventional metal strip rolling mill with two work-rolls supported by larger diameter backup-rolls. The strategy is based on a model which represents the effects of backup-roll eccentricity, the plastic deformation process and elastic strains in the mill stand components. The strategy overcomes many of the fundamental difficulties inherent in earlier approaches. An important feature of the design is its ability to track an arbitrary backup-roll induced eccentricity disturbance whose waveform changes dynamically and whose period is not known accurately because speed and rotation measurements are only available for the work-rolls. The feedback controller design compensates for force, hysteresis, mill dependent parameters and for the inherently nonlinear response of the force adjusting mechanism. Simulation studies are presented showing the advantages of the new design and its insensitivity to plant parameter variations.

There has been much discussion in recent literature on the question of robustness properties of adaptive control algorithms. The point of view adopted in this paper is that a 'robust' adaptive control algorithm is simply a combination of a 'robust' control law with a 'robust' parameter estimator. Since the constituent algorithms are themselves robust, we have coined the term adaptive robust control rather than the usual term robust adaptive control.

The potential benefits of compatibility checking of aircraft dynamic flight data has, in the past, not been fully realized when applied to real data. It is suggested that this is partly due to the presence of errors in the real data which are not usually accounted for in computer simulation studies. When factors such as instrument offset from centre of gravity, measurement time delays, sinusoidal disturbances and non-linearities are accounted for, good results can be achieved with moderate quality instrumentation. The effect of these factors on the identified instrument errors are studied using the extended Kalman Filter approach and the maximum likelihood method. The relative merits of each approach are studied.

One class of systems satisfying this requirement is the class having non-steady-state Kalman filter or innovations representations. This allows the usual assumption of a stationary ARMAX representation to be replaced by a more general state space model.

An indirect adaptive control scheme is presented for deterministic plants which are not necessarily minimum phase. Global convergence is established for the scheme in the sense that the closed loop poles are asymptotically assigned and the system input and output remain bounded for all time. A key feature of the scheme is that no persistency of excitation condition is required. The algorithm has been designed with time-varying problems in mind and uses recursive least squares with variable forgetting factor, normalized regression vectors, and a matrix gain with constant trace.

Adaptive control of discrete, deterministic, single-input single-output systems is considered using a ModelReference type approach. A sufficient condition upon the adaptation mechanism is obtained. Any algorithm satisfying it solves the adaptive control problem. In particular, constant gain algorithms are shown to verify it without requiring auxiliary signals or anticipative knowledge of the desired output, as generally required. Recent papers have established global convergence for stochastic adaptive control and prediction algorithms for discrete time linear systems. The general delay-white noise case and the unit delay-colored noise case have been treated. This paper extends the results to the general delay-colored noise case. Also, a slightly different proof technique is used which relies only upon elementary analysis and is thus of pedagogical interest. This paper discusses the problem of optimal design of experimental conditions for linear system identification. It is demonstrated that, in general, to achieve maximal return from an experiment, coupled design of all the experimental conditions, namely the test signal, sampling intervals and filters, should be carried out simultaneously. For the case of uniform sampling it is shown that joint design of the presampling filter, sampling rate and input can be carried out in the frequency domain. For the case of nonuniform sampling a sequential design procedure is developed which optimizes the information increment between samples. © 1974, IEEE. All rights reserved.

Nonlinear System identification has a rich history spanning at least 5 decades. A very flexible approach to this problem depends upon the use of Volterra series expansions. Related work includes Hammerstein models, where a static nonlinearity is followed by a linear dynamical system, and Wiener models, where a static nonlinearity is inserted after a linear dynamical model. A problem with these methods is that they inherently depend upon series type expansions and hence it is difficult to know which terms should be included. In this paper we present a possible solution to this problem using recent results on rank-constrained optimization. Simulation results are included to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed strategy.

© 1999 EUCA.Model predictive control is a well established strategy for dealing with saturating actuator problems. The essential feature of the method is a receding horizon quadratic optimal control problem which is solved subject to input constraints. On the other hand, anti-windup methods are ad-hoc procedures which achieve input saturation in an instantaneous fashion. Both methods are known to perform well in practice and each has its strong advocates. In this paper, we explore connections between the methods. In particular, we show that there are cases in which anti-windup schemes are identical to MPC schemes. In other cases, we show that anti-windup has performance which is close to that of MPC strategies.

© 2015 EPE Association and IEEE.This paper proposes a new interpretation of Finite Set Model Predictive Control (FS-MPC) for inverters. This interpretation gives insights into the existing limitations of FS-MPC and suggests mitigation strategies. Consequently, significant improvements of FS-MPC performance are achieved, including elimination of steady state error, improved harmonic spectrum, reduced control delays, etc. The proposed new MPC interpretation also establishes relationships between various control schemes, including FS-MPC and PWM-MPC, FS-MPC and MPC with integral action, etc. Additionally, the paper proposes further embellishments to FS-MPC based on its more efficient and accurate implementation. The findings of the paper are supported by simulations and experimental results.

© 2015 IEEE.Model Predictive Control (MPC) has received significant attention from the power electronics research community. In this paper we apply MPC approach to designing optimal current regulators for voltage source inverters (VSI), in the sense of tracking references and rejecting disturbances of interest. In particular, we present a detailed derivation of optimal current regulators for tracking references and rejecting disturbances of constant and harmonic types. We compare these to the existing control structures, such as proportional integral (PI) and proportional resonant (PR) current regulators. We further propose a strategy to improve their performance based on matching their structure and parameters to the optimal controllers. The findings of the paper are supported by PSIM simulations and preliminary experimental results.

© 1999 EUCA.This paper discusses the question of saturating actuators in a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) control system design. It is shown that direct application of standard anti-windup schemes can lead to loss of closed-loop stability, as well as, the degradation of the directional properties of the system. Consequently, a novel anti-windup scheme is proposed, where the intended procedure ensures stability, accompanied with exact dynamic decoupling in the presence of actuator saturation. In essence, this is accomplished by ensuring that all of the control signals are saturated to the correct value, even-though if they do not saturate at all. Simulation results comparing the difference between the dynamic anti-windup methodology and a non anti-windup scheme are presented.

Model Predictive Control (MPC) has attracted significant attention from the power electronics community. In this body of work it is usual to utilize a linear load model. Also, to deal with computational complexity, it is common to deploy horizon 1 optimization. A major difficulty with these standard approaches is that modelling errors, e.g. those arising from non-linear effects such as magnetic saturation, lead to poor tracking performance. In this paper we show that perfect tracking is achievable provided that MPC controller is augmented by a suitable observer.

This paper develops a nonlinear insulin to carbohydrate rule for use by type 1-diabetes patients. The goal is to refine the commonly used Insulin to Carbohydrate Ratio (ICR) formula. The latter is a strictly linear rule relating carbohydrates consumed to insulin infusion. The new relationship presented in this paper is nonlinear and depends on the availability of a nonlinear dynamic model describing a patient's blood glucose response to food and insulin. Such a model can be obtained by use of nonlinear system identification tools applied to patient test data. The suggested procedure is of similar complexity to the existing standard ICR rule. Hence it has the potential to be of clinical importance especially in developing countries where sophisticated solutions such as an artificial pancreas are unlikely to be used due to excessive cost. Simulations are presented which show that there exists a significant difference between the suggested insulin provided by the rule developed here and that given by the standard ICR rule.

This paper puts part of this literature into perspective by giving a modern interpretation of the Stochastic Embedding approach.

© IFAC.This paper presents a preliminary study of performance limitations that arise in the closed-loop control of blood glucose, using an autonomous artificial pancreas. It is shown that a major source of limitations is due to model uncertainty, specifically due to the combined effect of the insulin infusion system (IIS), the continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and the human glucose regulatory system. It is argued that the uncertainty associated with each of these elements compromises the achievable closed-loop bandwidth, and, in the presence of disturbances, e.g. meal intake and exercise, the closed-loop response will necessarily be poor. A proposition to overcome this problem is given based on feedforward action.

© IFAC.This paper addresses the control-rate versus quantizer-resolution trade-off in networked control. The case presented considers the situation where the bit rate between controller and plant is constrained to a fixed number of bits per unit of time and an underlying fixed fast sampling rate is deployed to take measurements. However, a variable control update rate can be used between the controller and the plant. Inspired by the practical problem of inner loop power control in WCDMA, we assume the plant is an integrator. This assumption covers more general plants when fast sampling is used. Also, a restricted architecture in which linear filters are used for the encoder/decoder is considered and a quantizer with linear feedback is deployed. These choices give maximal insights into the underlying problem. It is shown that, in this case, it is best to use one bit per sample, in which case, the control update frequency is equal to the bit rate.

© IFAC.This paper studies the problem of channel estimation for the downlink in broadband LTE communications. A Kalman Filter is used to combine channel soundings made with pilot tones that are deployed at different times and in different frequency bands on a pre-selected pattern. This Kalman filter is presented in a form directly suitable for implementation as a periodically time varying filter, in the case where periodic pilot tone data is available. Simulation results illustrate the efficacy of this approach.

© 2009 EUCA.This paper studies LTI one-degree-of-freedom networked control architectures built around LTI SISO plants. The feedback path comprises an unreliable channel that drops data in an i.i.d. fashion. We extend known results to show that there exists a second order moments equivalence between the situation examined and an auxiliary feedback loop where the unreliable channel has been replaced by an additive i.i.d. noise channel that has an equality signal-to-noise ratio constraint. We then use these insights to design optimal controllers. We also establish a necessary and sufficient condition on the successful transmission probability that allows for the design of a controller that guarantees MSS in the considered setup. Our proposal does not require packet arrival acknowledgements. Thus, our results give necessary and sufficient conditions for MSS in an output-feedback control architecture with UDP-like protocols.

© 2009 EUCA.We study a state estimation architecture for sensor networks, where several sensors transmit quantized innovations to a central estimator. Transmission is via a wireless channel, which is prone to fading leading to random packet loss. State estimation is carried out at the gateway via a time-varying Kalman filter which accounts for packet loss and quantization effects. To form the innovations at the sensors, the estimator transmits information regarding its current state estimate to the sensors. This information could be dedicated to each sensor or broadcast to all sensors. In addition, the gateway also decides upon power levels and quantization step-sizes to be used by each sensor node. Here, we adopt elements of predictive control to trade off estimation performance versus energy use.

Advanced design aims to achieve the best possible performance subject to operational constraints. Such questions can be formulated as optimization problems. The advantages of using an explicit optimization formulation include clear articulation of performance trade-offs and the provision of a clear basis for quantitative comparison of different strategies. In this paper we will briefly review aspects of modern optimization. We will also show how these tools can be deployed in scheduling, estimation and control. © 2003 EUCA.A well known difficulty in system identification over a large bandwidth is the ill-conditioning of the normal matrix. This typically manifests itself as poor or erroneous estimates. Several methods have been proposed in the literature for addressing this issue. However, none appear to give an entirely satisfactory solution. Here we present a novel technique, utilising particular basis functions, aimed specifically at improving the numerical properties of the least squares normal matrix in transfer function estimation over a wide bandwidth. We show that, under some mild assumptions, the achieved condition number is actually independent of the frequency range. Several examples are presented showing the superior performance of the proposed method when applied to wide-band estimation problems.

The uncertainty for the problem analyzed is related to incomplete state information (output feedback) and stochastic disturbances. We analyze the optimal solutions for short optimization horizons when the disturbances and the initial state are Gaussian random vectors. We also consider two suboptimal strategies, one of which is known as Certainty Equivalent Control.

© 2003 EUCA.The solution to constrained linear model predictive control (MPC) problems can be pre-computed off-line in an explicit form as a piecewise affine (PWA) state feedback law defined on polyhedral regions of the state space. Even though real-time optimization is avoided, implementation of the PWA state-feedback law may still require a significant amount of computation due to the problem of determining which polyhedral region the state lies in. In this paper, a neural network approach to this problem is investigated.

A key feature of the approach presented is the separate optimization of procedures for estimation and online control law synthesis. Regarding the estimation module, attention is given to such features as data filtering, the response of the estimator, techniques for handling unmodeled dynamics and the question of numerical accuracy. Regarding the control law synthesis module, attention is given to robustness to unstructured modeling errors, disturbance and set-point feedforward techniques and implementation issues. The performance is illustrated by reference to a case study.

The authors show that a robust adaptive controller can be developed which stabilizes all members of a wide class of systems. The class of systems includes those having significant unmodeled dynamics and nonminimum phase characteristics. The theoretical results are supported by experimental evidence of the claimed robustness properties. The success of the algorithm is a result of the amalgamation of various techniques including regression vector filtering, pole assignment, estimator deadzone, least squares and internal model principle.

The adaptive control of rigid link manipulator systems is examined. A parameterization of a general rigid body which yields dynamic equations that are linear in the unknown parameter is given. Standard linear estimation techniques together with an adaptive computed torque control law are shown to give a globally convergent adaptive system which does not require measurements of accelerations or additional torques.

ARC Discovery Project funding success
