Career Summary

Biography

Gordon is a lecturer and researcher with the Centre for Special Education and Disability Studies in the School of Education in the Faculty of Arts and Education, particularly in the teacher education programs.

Research

Gordon’s current research focuses on improving quality of life for people with severe cognitive impairments, including those with profound multiple disabilities and very advanced dementia. This research is currently around: decision making by and for people with severe cognitive impairments; developing ‘Stretching’ and ‘Deep Assessment”- two new techniques for improving quality of life for people with severe cognitive impairments; and curriculum development for students with profound multiple disabilities. Gordon is a member of the UON Centre for Special Education and Disability Studies Research Group and the Australian Research Network in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. He has been a chief or associate investigator on nine funded research projects, and the recipient of fourteen competitive grants, awards and scholarships totalling to around $425K. He was principal of Gordon Lyons Consultancy from 1998 until 2014.

Teaching

Gordon’s school teaching expertise has been recognised in appointment to five executive positions during his school teaching career. In 2007 Gordon’s university teaching expertise was recognised through student nomination in the Nelson Hall / UniJobs competition as the Runner Up in the University of Newcastle Lecturer of the Year. In 2008 he was further recognised as one of the Nelson Hall / UniJobs Top 10 University of Newcastle lecturers of the year. Gordon currently coordinates six undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Research Higher Degree Supervision

Gordon is interested in supervising full-time PhD students in the areas of profound multiple disabilities, disability studies, classroom management, and special education. Gordon currently c0-supervises two PhD students and three MPhil students. He has previously supervised students completing Honours Theses, Teacher Research Reports, Student Equity Summer Scholarship Research Reports and has supported a UNISS scholar through to graduation. He has also supervised two MEd students to completion.
