Career Summary

Biography

I have an excellent and long-standing record of consistently successful research extending over several decades, across the areas of project design, implementation and reporting of results. My contribution to chemistry is broad and strong, as attested by my many publications, regular success with grants from government and industry, and research student completions. Apart from being the author of ~300 research papers and reviews in international journals published over the past three decades, my research has been presented widely in invited lectures at conferences and is well cited. My citation h-index is high at 31, with 18.2 average citations per item, and 144 average citations per year. Major reviews have appeared in the two highest-cited chemistry review journals, Accounts of Chemical Research and Chemical Reviews, amongst other key journals and monographs. I have recently co-authored a major chapter in Comprehensive Coordination Chemistry II and authored a review article in the Encyclopaedia of Inorganic Chemistry II. Research includes several decades of work at the forefront of metal coordination chemistry. In particular, my contributions to synthesis and physical properties of acyclic and macrocyclic molecules and their compounds are internationally recognised. In a long-term association with A/Prof M. Maeder and external collaborators, I have developed an internationally-known family of C-pendant macrocycles and examined both their coordination chemistry and potential as vehicles for engineering different and larger molecules.

Further, I have proposed and developed a range of other ligand topologies. Project-relevant studies of stereochemistry and optical activity in complexes have been a continuing area of interest for decades. I have deep experience in inorganic reaction mechanisms, including pioneering work in the use of high pressures to probe reaction mechanisms. The development of significant and novel inorganic chemistry employing the trifluoromethanesulfonate ion is indicative of the breadth of my academic research. My contribution to research has been noted by the award of the national Royal Australian Chemical Institutes Rennie Medal for research, and by award of a Doctor of Science degree. I have also supervised many honours and research students; some past doctoral students hold continuing academic positions in Australia and overseas, and others hold senior industrial research appointments in Australia, Europe and America.

I have extensive prior and current collaborative research projects with other groups in Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Queensland, Western Australia, and Monash Universities) and overseas (University of Heidelberg, Germany; University of Barcelona, Spain; University of St Andrews, UK; Victoria University of Wellington, NZ, amongst others). Chemistry related to mineral processing or treatment has been my major area of applied research, and I have developed projects in hydrometallurgy, waste treatment, minerals recovery from ore, and electrolytic manganese dioxide for batteries. I am the founding co-editor of the international journal Inorganic Reaction Mechanisms, which published papers in coordination, organometallic and bioinorganic chemistry. I was also from 1998-2004 inclusive on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Australian Journal of Chemistry. In addition, I am a regular assessor of manuscripts for a range of major international journals (including imprints of the American Chemical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry).

I have served as an examiner of about thirty M.Sc., Ph.D. and D.Sc. theses from institutes within Australia and overseas. My research profile has been achieved and continued at a consistently strong level despite long-standing substantial administrative positions within the University (including Head of Department, 1992-2000; Deputy Dean of Science and Mathematics, 1994-mid-2001; Dean of Science and Mathematics, mid-2001-2002). The ability to balance these tasks while performing at a continuously strong level in research is evident from my strong research outcomes over the past decade.

Research Expertise
Research has covered a broad range over recent years, but is centred on inorganic chemistry, and particularly metal coordination chemistry. It has involved contributions to the following fields: coordination chemistry; inclusion and encapsulation chemistry; bioinorganic chemistry; metal-directed syntheses of macrocyclic ligands; synthesis of polydentate ligand; kinetics and thermodynamics of polydentate ligand complexation; electrochemistry and spectroscopy of coordination complexes; inorganic reaction mechanisms; pressure-dependent kinetics and activation volumes; stopped-flow kinetics; metal-catalysed hydrolysis of phosphate esters, RNA and DNA; metal complexes for selective DNA cleavage; mechanisms of inorganic cluster formation; X-ray crystal structures and molecular modeling of metal coordination compounds; trifluoromethanesulfonate complexes as synthons; synthetic, structural and mechanistic studies of polyoxometallate clusters; applied chemistry of hydroxide precipitation of metal ions from waste waters; applied chemistry and electrochemistry of manganese oxides, particularly battery grade electrolytic manganese dioxide.

Teaching Expertise
My teaching career in chemical sciences is extensive, and I have taught in a number of universities. I have a formal tertiary teaching qualification and a career-long interest and involvement in teaching and its development. I have extensive experience in both course and program development (including new degree development, such as the B.Sc.(Forensic) and M. Sc. Studies). I have published papers in chemical education and presented work at science education meetings. Further, I was earlier heavily involved at the secondary-tertiary interface through membership of the NSW HSC Examination committee and NSW Board of Studies Science Syllabus Committees, and was a co-author of a revision of the chemistry science syllabus in 1994 as well as a participant for the NSW Board of Studies in development of the current syllabus. I have developed or participated in student outreach and development schemes, including the national UnIChe program for top quality students in chemistry and chemical engineering, as co-grantee of major DETYA and other grants. I was also co-director of a DETYA project to assess innovation in science teacher preparation at a national level, and co-author of the published report.

Administrative Expertise
I have served widely as a member and or chair at different times over a period of several decades on Academic Senate, on various university committees (research, promotions, etc), faculty committees, and school and department/ discipline committees. I had approximately ten years continuous experience as Head of the Department of Chemistry. For over six years, I held the continuing senior position of Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics. This was during times of significant development and change in the Faculty and, more widely, in the University. As the Deputy Dean my r¿le was diverse, ranging from representing and acting for the Dean in his absence, consultation with the Dean regarding aspects of Faculty management and policy and with regard to Faculty responses to wider University issues, through to policy development for the Faculty. Subsequently, I served for a semester as the last Dean of Science and Mathematics, immediately prior to introducton of the new Faculty structure. I currently serve as an Assistant Dean in Science & IT.

Recrystallization of [PdCl2([9]aneS2O)] ([9]aneS2O = 1-oxa-4,7-dithiacyclononane), 1, and [PtCl2([9]aneS2O)], 2, by diffusion of Et2O vapor into solutions of the complexes in MeNO2 yielded three phases of 1 and two phases of 2. The known phase of 1, herein designated a-1, was obtained under ambient conditions. A second phase, designated ß-1, was initially also obtained by this method; however, following the advent of a third phase, ¿-1, all subsequent efforts over a period of a year to crystallize ß-1 yielded either ¿-1, obtained by carrying out the recrystallization at elevated temperature, or a-1, commonly found throughout the study. This persistent absence of a phase which could initially be crystallized with ease led us to the conclusion that ß-1 was an example of a "disappearing polymorph". The first phase obtained of 2, designated a-2, was obtained by recrystallization under ambient conditions and is isomorphous and isostructural with a-1. The second phase ß-2 was obtained by slight elevation of the recrystallization temperature and was found to be isomorphous and isostructural with ß-1. Subsequently, ß-2 was used to seed the growth of the disappearing polymorph ß-1. No third phase of 2 (¿-2) has been isolated thus far.

The X-ray crystal structures of K 6[Co IIW 12O 40]·~16H 2O and K 5[Co IIIW 12O 40]·~16H 2O are reported. The compounds are isostructural, hexagonal, space group P6 222, and have Z 3 with a 19.118(7), c 12.383(9) Å, V 3919.6(35) Å 3, and a 19.111(2), c 12.509(2) Å, V 3956.6(9) Å 3, respectively. Both anions exhibit the standard a-Keggin structure, which consists of a central tetrahedrally coordinated Co II or Co III, surrounded by four groups of three edge-sharing octahedra (W 3O 13 subunits) which are linked in turn to each other and to the central CoO 4 tetrahedron by shared oxygen atoms at the vertices. Although thermogravimetric analyses show that there are c. 16 water molecules per formula unit in both compounds, only six and three water molecules for the Co II and Co III compounds, respectively, could be crystallographically located. The others are presumably zeolitic and highly disordered in nature. Structural differences between the anions on replacement of Co II by Co III, as well as comparisons with the related [PW 12O 40] 3- and [SiW 12O 40] 4- ions, which contain (formally) P V and Si IV, respectively, are discussed. This comparison indicates that the W 3O 13 subunits become progressively more isolated with increasing size of the central heteroatom from P V to Co II, while the bonding within an individual W 3O 13 subunit becomes weaker. Extended-Hückel molecular orbital calculations are used to examine stability changes in the polyoxotungstate framework, using the actual polyoxotungstate geometries of the anions, on variation in size of the central heteroatom. These are compared to that in the [H 3W 12O 40] 5- ion, which has two centrally located H + ions, but no steric effects. The studies show that no major changes occur in the overall stability of the framework, but that there is a redistribution in the contributions of the two types of bridging oxygen atoms to the stability of the framework, which parallels the progressive isolation and weaker bonding in the W 3O 13 subunits. © CSIRO 2000.

The electrochemistry of the enzyme, sulfide:cytochrome c oxidoreductase, also known as flavocytochrome c552 from the purple sulfur bacterium, Chromatium vinosum, has been studied using several modified electrodes. Direct electron transfer between the heme of the flavocytochrome and an electrode is observed in the presence of a redox-inactive cationic species which promotes the voltammetry of the enzyme. Quasi-reversible electron transfer was achieved using the aminoglycoside, neomycin, as a promoter at either a modified gold or polished edge-plane graphite electrode. Further evidence for direct electron transfer is provided by the catalytic response of the enzyme at the electrode in the presence of substrate. Also reported is the direct spectroelectrochemistry of flavocytochrome c552 at an optically transparent thin layer gold electrode modified with Cys-Glu-Cys in the presence of neomycin.

The syntheses and characterization of the macrobicyclic hexaamine chromium(III) complexes of diamsar (1,8-diamino-3,6,10,13,16,19-hexaazabicyclo[6.6.6]eicosane) and sar (3,6,10,13,16,19-hexaazabicyclo[6.6.6]eicosane) ligands (1-3) are reported. The complexes were isolated as stable, paramagnetic, and monomeric salts. [Cr(diamsar)]Cl

3·H

2O crystallized in the space group P2

1/c, (Z = 4, a = 9.474 (2) Å, b = 13.331 (3) Å, c = 18.221 (5) Å, ß = 92.756 (0)°) with the octahedral cation in the C

3-let conformation and an average Cr-N distance of 2.070 (3) Å. The complexes are high-spin d

3 with room-temperature magnetic moments near the spin-only value of 3.87 µ

B. The aqueous electrochemistry exhibits a quasi-reversible Cr(III/II) couple below -1 V for each complex and a further irreversible Cr(II/0) reduction near -1.6 V; the chromium(II) complexes are not stable in the coulometric time scales (minutes). The Cr(III) electronic spectra show the expected spin-allowed absorption bands of

2g origin as well as weak spin-forbidden bands of

g,

g origin in the visible region. The first of these (

2g transition) is split by -400 cm

3+ and Cr(diamsar)

3+ emit rather strongly at 77 K (fp

H2O ¿ 0.02), but give no detectable emission above 273 K. Photodecomposition of Cr(diamsar)

3+ is ~10

4-fold smaller than that of the Cr(en)

The redox chemistry of the mixed nitrogen-sulfur donor cobalt(III) complexes with the macrobicyclic ligands 8-methyl-6,10,19-trithia-1,3,14,16-tetraazabicyclo[6.6.6]icosane (azacapten), 1-methyl-8-nitro-3,13,16-trithia-6,10,19-triazabicyclo[6.6.6]icosane ((NO2)capten), and 8-ammonio-1-methyl-3,13,16-trithia-6,10,19-triazabicyclo[6.6.6]icosane ((NH3+)capten) and of the hexadentate precursor ligand 5-(4-amino-2-thiabutyl)-5-methyl-3,7-dithia-1,9-nonanediamine (ten) has been investigated in aqueous and aprotic solutions. The macrobicyclic complexes exhibit a chemically and electrochemically reversible Co(III)/Co(II) couple near 0 V in aqueous (NHE) and aprotic solutions (Ag/AgCl) and a chemically irreversible but elctrochemically reversible 1-e couple near -1 V, nominally Co(II)/Co(I). In addition, a further multielectron couple is observed for the azacapten complex at more negative potentials. No evidence for oxidation processes was forthcoming. The low-spin d7 cobalt(II) complex of (NH3+)capten has been characterized by ESR spectroscopy at 4.2 K, and the nominally d8 cobalt(I) complex, at 100 K. The former compound exhibits g values at 1.94, 2.21, and 4.22, while the latter compound shows an eight-line pattern at g = 2.17 (A = 67 G) consistent with its formulation as d8 Co(I) and not as a d7 Co(II)-S radical state. © 1984 American Chemical Society.
