Career Summary

Biography

Associate Professor Fiona Blinkhorn obtained her Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Manchester, UK in 1981. She began her career working for the Public Dental Service in the North West of England treating adults and children with special needs. She obtained her Master of Dental Surgery in 1986 investigating treatment services and dental needs of the elderly living at home. From there she joined the ranks of the academic fraternity and began teaching dental students and hygienists at the University of Manchester whilst undertaking specialist training in Paediatric Dentistry. Teaching has always been Fiona's great passion but she still maintained her clinical interest in Paediatric Dentistry and was awarded the title of Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry by the General Dental Council in 1999. She then began a secondment to the Dental Health Research Unit at the University of Manchester where she was an Examiner on a large caries clinical trial and she also obtained her PhD investigating dento-alveolar trauma in children. Fiona's career then diversified into management and she held the positions of Director and Clinical Director of Dental Services for a large Area Health Service, again in the UK. Once again, she maintained her clinical and academic teaching sessions. In 2002 Fiona was awarded $500,000 to set up a School to train Dental Therapists and Hygienists within an AHS. The School was, and still is, very successful. In 2007 Fiona emigrated to Australia and once more began a career in the Public Dental Service, as Consultant in Oral health Promotion, for NSSCH Oral Health Service. In 2009 she set up a new program at the University of Newcastle, NSW, - the Graduate Diploma in Dental Therapy and was appointed to the position of Associate Professor to oversee this new and exciting postgraduate program. Fiona has numerous publications in peer reviewed journals and her research interests include health services research, early childhood oral health and the field of dental education

Research Expertise
A/Prof Blinkhorn has forty publications in peer reviewed journals and given numerous conference presentations internationally. Since emigrating to Australia A/Prof Blinkhorn has developed an interest in the oral health of Aboriginal children, which is particularly poor with high levels of dental disease. She is currently working in collaboration with a research team from the University of Sydney to improve early childhood oral health in this population. A/Prof Blinkhorn is particularly interested in Health Services Research and has undertaken a number of health promotion studies evaluating the benefits of different oral health interventions in the child population. Having been involved with teaching students for over twenty years, A/Prof Blinkhorn has a special interest in evaluating teaching experiences, particularly outreach teaching. Her research has shown that oral health outreach placements in the public dental service provide numerous benefits to students.

Teaching Expertise
Associate Professor Blinkhorn has a strong interest in student learning and has undertaken a number of projects evaluating the benefits of student placements. She has over twenty years of experience of teaching in the field of Paediatric Dentistry and is a registered Specialist Paedodontist.

Administrative Expertise
Associate Professor Blinkhorn was Founder and Head of the Greater Manchester School for Professions Complementary to Dentistry. The School was funded by a grant from the UK government following a successful grant application from A/Prof Blinkhorn. This position involved professional, administrative and financial responsibility involved with running the School which trained Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists. A/Prof Blinkhorn is the Deputy Editor of the International Journal of Health Promotion and Education, a position she has held for eight years. The Journal deals with all the vital issues involved in health education and promotion worldwide - providing a valuable link between the health education research and practice communities.

Collaborations
A/Prof Blinkhorn is currently working in collaboration with the Centre for Oral Health Strategy, NSW Health, looking at ways to improve the oral health of the elderly population. She is also working in collaboration with the Department of Population Oral Health from the University of Sydney investigating different strategies to improve the oral health of Aboriginal children.

Aims: The aim of this study was to determine whether dental hygiene students attending residential aged care facilities (RACFs) during a placement programme gained any knowledge about the oral care of elderly patients and the RACF environment. Location: Aged Care Facilities on the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia. Methodology: Final year dental hygiene students undertook a 12-week placement, one day per week, in one of 17 residential aged care facilities on the NSW Central Coast. They were asked to complete pre-placement and post-placement questionnaires, which recorded their knowledge of medical, dental and environmental issues related to older people. The placement questionnaires used five point Likert scales, ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree, pre- and post-mean scores were produced for each question and P values calculated using a paired t-test. Results: Thirty-three students attended the placement, 26 (79%) completed both the pre- and post-placement questionnaires. Post-placement mean scores as compared to pre-placement mean scores showed significant improvement in student knowledge of medical (P < 0.05) and dental (P < 0.05) conditions specific to the older person and improvement in knowledge (P < 0.05) about the residential aged care facility environment. Conclusion: The placement programme enhanced student knowledge across three subject categories; medical and dental conditions of the older person and the structure and services of the residential aged care environment. © 2014 John Wiley & Sons A/S.

The study investigated the impact of Guinea Worm Disease on the lives of people living in rural areas of Nigeria. It examined the nature of Guinea Worm Disease, its severity and effect on the economic and social well-being of people living in the rural community of the Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State, Nigeria. One hundred and forty-eight infected persons in four local government areas completed the Guinea Worm Disease Severity Questionnaire and the Socio-economic Well-being Questionnaire. The study established that there was a significant impact of severity of Guinea Worm infection on both the economic well-being (p < 0.0.05) and the social well-being of infected people (p < 0.05). It is recommended that health care providers (nurses, social workers, environmental officers, etc.) provide support in the form of identification and management of the needs of each infected person; in addition, they have a vital health promotion role to educate the local community of the dangers of drinking unclean water. © 2013 Institute of Health Promotion and Education.

A comparative study to compare the acceptability of the miswak chewing stick with a conventional toothbrush in a population of Iranian adolescents. Fifty-one 11-12 year old male and female pupils with irregular oral hygiene habits attending a government school in Mashad, Iran, made up the study population. The aims of the study were to determine firstly, their stated reasons for irregular use of the toothbrush, secondly, the uptake and acceptability of the miswak chewing stick and the toothbrush by this group and thirdly, the effectiveness of regular use of the miswak and the toothbrush in removing plaque. The study was conducted over four weeks with measurements taken at baseline, two-week intervals and at the end of four weeks. The data was collected using questionnaires and clinical examination of plaque, which was measured using the Tooth Cleanliness Index (TCI) (Blinkhorn and Mackie 1992). The results showed that the main reason stated for irregular oral hygiene maintenance was forgetfulness. A total of 22 pupils (44%) preferred the toothbrush and 24 pupils (48%) preferred the miswak. Of those who preferred the toothbrush, the majority were females and more males preferred the miswak. The main reason for preferring the miswak over the toothbrush was that it is easier to use and the main reason for preferring the toothbrush was the bad smell or taste of the miswak. The results showed a significant improvement in the plaque levels of this population between baseline, day 14 and day 28. A trend was observed for the mean TCI score, which increased when the pupils changed the brushing tool from the miswak to the toothbrush after two weeks. The main finding from this study is that the miswak can be used as an alternative to the toothbrush.
