Microgrid (MG) technologies facilitate reliable, efficient, and economic operation of distributed resources such as photovoltaic and battery storage systems. The well-known droop method controls different sources in an MG to properly share power supply. However, utilizing the droop method poses two major challenges. First, while the droop method can prevent converter overloading, it cannot protect them from overstressing, thus deteriorating system reliability. Second, operating a 100% renewable-based MG requires a supervisory unit to monitor and control energy flow for load-generation balance. However, the supervisory unit relies on communication systems which impacts overall system reliability by being exposed to single-point failures and cyberattacks. This article proposes a decentralized power sharing approach that restricts thermal damage of converter components to avoid over-stressing converters. The main goal is to improve overall system performance and reliability by appropriately sharing active and reactive power among different sources without using communication systems. The simulations and numerical analysis show that the proposed decentralized strategy will properly control the power and energy flow among different sources. Moreover, it prevents over-stressing converters, consequently enhancing the overall reliability of the MG. An experiment is also presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed decentralized control approach.

This paper provides an extensive review of control strategies for Matrix Converters (MC), starting from early research in 1980s and including the most recent and ongoing developments. The paper identifies and discusses four main approaches, namely: direct control; linear (PI) control with pulse width modulation (PWM); model predictive control (MPC); and state feedback control. Two novel control strategies for MC (fixed division MPC and state feedback control with power matching), proposed by the authors, are included in the paper scope. The paper compares performance of the selected control schemes by simulation. It demonstrates the benefits of state feedback control for MC and outlines future directions of its improvement.

DC-DC converters are widely used in various applications, including renewable energy integration and electric transport. Performance of DC-DC converters can be improved through using advanced control methods. This paper introduces state feedback control with state and disturbance observers for a buck converter. The paper includes detailed mathematical modelling in both continuous-time and discrete-time domains, as well as detailed design of the observer and control parameters. The paper compares performance of state feedback control and PI control and shows advantages of the former. Detailed simulations in MATLAB/Simulink environment validate the paper findings.

The rotor saliency of the axially laminated synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) produces a square airgap flux density distribution. If a square current distribution interacts with this flux the SynRM generates its optimal torque. This paper extends previous work on the magnetic modelling of the SynRM. A design model is proposed which incorporates all rotor and stator dimensions. Saturation effects have also been included in the model. The key dimensions affecting SynRM performance are identified as rotor radius, rotor pole pitch, rotor steel : steel+fibre ratio, airgap, stator current density and stator slot opening. An iterative algorithm is determined for the design optimization process. This algorithm is simple enough to be implemented in a spreadsheet environment. The model is used to design a 5 kW motor with an optimal torque/unit mass ratio. The designed motor has a nine phase concentrated winding to approximate the ideal square current excitation. Finite element analysis and a static load test on the constructed machine confirm the model's predictions. In addition, optimal values for the key motor dimensions, over a range of motor sizes, are determined and discussed.
