Dr Chris Tucker

Senior Lecturer

School of Architecture and Built Environment (Architecture)

Career Summary

Biography

Chris Tucker is the Head of Discipline (Architecture) within the School of Architecture and Built Environment, and principal of the architectural practice, herd (since 1996). Chris has been awarded regional, state and international prizes for architecture, and his buildings and designs have been exhibited and published locally and internationally.  Always working between practice and research, Chris has been awarded over $600,000 in research funding. His M.Phil (2010) was an algorithmic study of the visual properties of the street, while his Phd (2017) was a theoretical, critical and practice based study of the architecture of the street.  It’s needling of the vague and generic qualities of contemporary public space - urban vague- establishes new architectural sites within the city. Interested broadly in the public capacity of the street, Chris also runs architectural studio’s within the Town Camps of Alice Springs (from 2017) and Tokyo (2019).

Research Expertise

  • The architecture of the street.
  • The nearly-urban ring within cities.
  • The urban vague of contemporary urban planning and public space.
  • Architecture as research.
  • Project based research.

Teaching Expertise

Teaching has included the course coordination of architecture studio's across all five years of an architecture programs. As the Head of Discipline (Architecture) since 2016, Master of Architecture Program Convenor, and course coordinator of the final year Architecture Studio course (2010-2016), the graduating studio program was renewed to become more responsive to the diversity and potential of architectural practice. In the process the student's self directed architectural project was encouraged to become more responsive to the student’s own ethical action toward the future of the built environment. Developing architecture as research within the program also enabled students to explore the cultural and urban fabric of Newcastle, engaging with its post-industrial heritage and its conditions of social equity - a characteristic driving both a public discourse and professional awareness of the architecture program at the University of Newcastle.

Administrative Expertise

  • Head of Discipline (Architecture) from 2016
  • UoN English Language Foundation Studies Centre Board from 2018
  • Program Convenor for the Master of Architecture program from 2010-2016
  • Program Convenor for the Master of Architecture (PG entry) program from 2011-2015
  • FEBE Teaching and Learning Committee from 2016
  • FEBE Faculty Progress and Appeals Committee from 2012-2015
  • FEBE Marketing Committee 2006-2009
  • Student Academic Conduct Officer in 2008 and 2010

Collaborations

Research collaborations include leading the City Evolutions project with Newcastle City Council, a project involving 30 researchers across 3 Faculties. Other urban research projects have collaborated with the School of Computer Science, NSW Department of Family and Community Services, NSW Urban Growth, Transport NSW, Newcastle Now and Lake Macquarie City Council.

Work-integrated learning (WIL) provides an opportunity for integrating Indigenous and Western learning pedagogies and facilitate a meaningful pathway for authentic learning through developing partnerships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous stakeholders. However, research in developing WIL with Indigenous communities and appropriate learning pedagogies is limited. This paper discusses how WIL can inculcate Indigenous and non-Indigenous learning pedagogies to facilitate authentic, culturally enhanced learning. The proposed theoretical framework was constructed using the concepts relating to ¿8 Ways of Knowing Indigenous Learning¿ framework, Studio Based Learning, Co-design, and WIL. The research method draws on autoethnographic approaches to reflect and critically analyze academic observations and reflections across two case studies. The findings propose a WIL pedagogical approach integrating Indigenous and non-Indigenous learning pedagogies to enable authentic learning by co-generating emergent knowledge in complex socio-cultural contexts. Moreover, this approach enables training architecture students to represent cultures and values of the Indigenous communities in the mainstream Anglo Australian architecture.

With populations ageing across the developed world, there is increasing interest in the impact of the urban environment on the capacity of people to age in place. This is a significant issue not only for the quality of life of older people but also for the longer-term sustainability of cities and neighbourhoods. This paper presents findings from a cross-disciplinary pilot research study that addresses the link between health in older Australians and urban sustainability. The paper details a unique neighbourhood assessment method that explores associations between subjective and objective measures of neighbourhood characteristics and health for community dwelling people aged 55 years and over. The results reveal that health is a major pre-occupation for the study group but social interaction and the built environment are major influences on quality of life. It is anticipated that the pilot study will lead to the development of guidelines for the design of sustainable urban environments that respond to the health needs of an increasingly diverse ageing population.
