Lattice parameter data from the literature have been used to provide a complete description of spontaneous strain variations across each of the six known phase transitions of W O 3 in the temperature interval 5-1273 K. Analysis of strain/order parameter coupling reveals the character of each phase transition, a unified description of strain across the full temperature range, the relationship between strain and electronic effects, and new insights into the strain gradients likely to be present in each of the different domain walls that develop in four different ferroelastic phases. Tetragonal and orthorhombic shear strains have values of 4%-6% and 2%-3%, respectively, and are dominated by coupling with the order parameter for antiferroelectric-type displacements. Conversely, shear strains, e 4, e 5, and e 6, of up to 2% are controlled by octahedral tilting. Changes in electronic structure and properties have been related back to the susceptibility of W 6 + to develop cooperative second-order-Jahn-Teller distortions. Proximity to tilt instabilities along with group-subgroup relationships in the P 4 / n m m parent structure results in two overlapping sequences of structural phase transitions, which differ in the form of their electronic structure. The possibility of a ground state structure in space group P 2 1 / c can be rationalized in terms of the efficiency by which different combinations of shearing and tilting of the W O 6 octahedra can reduce the unit cell volume and would imply that W O 3 has a re-entrant phase transition. Gradients in up to three order parameters coupled with gradients in strain of up to 12% across ferroelastic domain walls indicate that the different ferroelastic phases of W O 3 should have domain walls with varied and potentially exotic electronic properties for device applications such as in nanoelectronics and neuromorphic computing.

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite (HOIP) ferroelectrics are attracting considerable interest because of their high performance, ease of synthesis, and lightweight. However, the intrinsic thermodynamic origins of their ferroelectric transitions remain insufficiently understood. Here, we identify the nature of the ferroelectric phase transitions in displacive [(CH3)2NH2][Mn(N3)3] and order-disorder type [(CH3)2NH2][Mn(HCOO)3] via spatially resolved structural analysis and ab initio lattice dynamics calculations. Our results demonstrate that the vibrational entropy change of the extended perovskite lattice drives the ferroelectric transition in the former and also contributes importantly to that of the latter along with the rotational entropy change of the A-site. This finding not only reveals the delicate atomic dynamics in ferroelectric HOIPs but also highlights that both the local and extended fluctuation of the hybrid perovskite lattice can be manipulated for creating ferroelectricity by taking advantages of their abundant atomic, electronic, and phononic degrees of freedom.

The structure of CaTiO3 has been studied at high temperatures by powder neutron diffraction methods. From inspection of the diffraction data two phase transitions are evident, with an intermediate tetragonal (14/mcm) structure forming near 1500 K and a primitive cubic (Pm3¯m) structure above 1580 K. Detailed Rietveld analyses of the data suggest there may also be a phase transition from the room temperature Pbnm structure to an orthorhombic Cmcm structure around 1380 K. A remarkable feature of the results is the regular variation in the out-of-phase octahedral tilt angle over the entire temperature range.

The crystal structure of Zr2NiD4 at room temperature has been investigated by high resolution neutron powder diffraction. The diffraction pattern has been successfully fitted on the basis of a monoclinic structure in space group I2/c with cell parameters a = 0.6789 nm, b = 0.6758 nm, c = 0.5675 nm, ß = 91.04° relative to the neutron wavelength of 0.1893(1) nm. The site occupancies of the deuterium atoms are compared with model calculations and results from previous X-ray and neutron data from Zr2Ni hydrides and deuterides of similar compositions based on the similar tetragonal CuAl2-type structure of Zr2Ni.

The structure of pyrochlore type Y2Sn2O7 has been refined by Rietveld analysis from 1.4925 A neutron powder diffraction data collected at 295 K and containing 46 independent reflections. The refinement figures of merit were RP=0.041, RWP=0.055, Rexp=0.039, and RB=0.006. The structure is a pyrochlore type, space group (S.G.) Fd3m with a=10.3723(l) A, Dx=6.21 g cm-3, and with the oxygen position parameter of 0.33694(5). The Sn atoms are in a nearly regular octahedral coordination whereas the Y has a distorted 8-fold coordination geometry. The anisotropic thermal parameters were also determined. The refined model has been used to calculate a set of d-I X-ray data for search/match analysis. © 1993, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.

For phase transition studies, neutron powder diffraction offers a number of important advantages over x-ray based techniques, for example ab-initio structural determination. There are two distinct methods using either monochromatic angular dispersive geometry on a reactor cold source or time-of-flight 'energy-dispersive techniques requiring a pulsed neutron source. Both techniques offer comparable resolution but have differing advantages for high pressure studies. Recent studies illustrate the benefits of the two methods and the application of these to solve unknown crystal structures. © 1990, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. All rights reserved.
