Research Expertise
Cathy’s research focuses on the relations between architectural theory and practice, with a specific concentration on poststructuralist philosophy, theories of neomaterialism and the geophilosophical writings of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. Her doctoral thesis, completed at the University of Sydney in 2012, develops a theoretical account of DIY architecture: deploying Deleuze and Guattari’s philosophical notion of the artisan to explore and engage the DIY manuals of North American architects Ant Farm and Paolo Soleri. More recently, Cathy’s research focuses on the relation between notions of labour / making, architecture and identity. . Her research has been published both internationally and internationally. Summary of key areas of interest: - DIY urbanism: the relation between architecture, urban identity / expression, and the notion of 'participatory or contributory economies', with a particular interest in temporary urban projects - Architecture and philosophy; the relation between post-structuralism, geophilosophy and neo-materialism - DIY architecture and procurement methodologies: the blurred relation between the designing, making and occupation, 1:1 scale prototyping and design-build; and material repurposing and recycling; - Timber-framing as it relates to the notion of tectonics and the attendant expressiveness of construction - Site-specific installation and interdisciplinary practice

Teaching Expertise
With professional degrees in both architecture and interior design, Cathy is particularly interested in the ways in which interdisciplinary thinking and materials-focused practices can challenge habitual modes of architectural production and occupation. Her studio teaching focuses on the relations between project sites, ideas, architectural form and space, and materiality; and involves 1:1 scale experimental prototypes and installations, as well as speculative architectural propositions. Current teaching at The University of Newcastle includes: ARBE3200 HIST & THEORY IN BUILT ENV 3: Course Coordinator, Lecturer, Tutor ARBE6221 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 4B: Lecturer, Tutor ARBE4121A& B RESEARCH IN THE BUILT ENV B: Dissertation Supervisor
