Career Summary

Biography

Bruce King has 27 years experience in surface analysis using probe microscopies as well as laser, ion and electron beams. He is the author of 5 book chapters on aspects of surface analysis and 101 papers published in international refereed journals.His major contributions are in the area of surface physics - the basic mechanisms of ion beam interactions with surfaces with 61 papers encompassing experimental and theoretical studies of the problem. These papers include studies using SIMS and RIMS, simulation studies using the SRIM, MARLOWE and coupled differential equations - all techniques to be used in this project.

Specific contributions to surface physics include

(i) the study of the effect of ion beam mixing on SIMS depth profiles, both experimentally and through simulation

(ii) the use of low energy ion scattering to identify the changes in the surface atomic structure of metal alloys with adsorption. This work has been previously funded by ARC DP grants.

(iii) the demonstration of the ability of laser postionisation to make sensitive measurements of atoms and molecules desorbed from surfaces under laser and ion beam impact. This work has been previously funded by the ARC in DP and LIEF grants.

Over the past five years A/Prof Bruce King has jointly supervised 8 postgraduate students, 5 of whom have now completed their studies and graduated. Previously, he has received a Teaching Excellence award from the University of Newcastle in recognition of his postgraduate supervision. He has been involved in the organisation of 6 international and Australian conferences in the past 10 years, including being an organiser of the Seventh International Conference on Structure of Surfaces (ICSOS7, Newcastle, July 2002) and editor of the ICSOS7 proceedings. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Physics and is secretary of the Vacuum Society of Australia. He is a member of the executive committee of AINSE (The Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering). He is a member of the international committee for the PITSA conference series and has been active in the SIMS conference series. He is a member of the ARC funded Nanotechnology Network and has established peer-reviewed funded collaborations with the University of Loughborough (UK) and Argonne National Laboratory (USA).

Since 2003 I have invested a lot of effort in an interaction with Argonne National Lab to develop the use of a free electron laser in mass spectrometry. Unfortunately the instrument did not get the required funding from the US Dept of Energy and was shut down in 2006 with only 3 papers generated to show for years of design and construction. This has reduced my output over the last few years.

Ionized and neutral clusters were desorbed from spangold, a polycrystalline ternary alloy with composition Au7Cu5Al4, using both a femtosecond laser beam and an energetic ion beam and the resulting time of flight mass spectra compared. Neutral clusters containing up to 7 atoms were ejected by the 15 keV Ar+ beam whereas only smaller positively and negatively charged clusters were observed from the laser ablated spangold surface. Laser ionization mass spectrometry (LIMS) positive ion spectra were dominated by Al containing cluster ions whereas Au containing ions dominated the negative LIMS spectrum. An odd-even variation in LIMS cluster yield was observed, consistent with previous results and due to fragmentation of photoionized clusters. The laser sputtered neutral mass spectrometry (laser SNMS) spectrum showed that larger desorbed clusters were gold rich. The cluster signals also followed a power law dependence with cluster size with the exponent value of 6-7.6 for sputtered mixed clusters being greater than that found from sputtering of pure elements, similar to the result found previously in the Cu-Au system.

The far-field spatial distributions of higher order electromagnetic mode supercontinua were resolved spectrally and recorded. The supercontinua were created by precise control and direction of input pump energy offset axially from the photonic crystal fiber core. By processing the measured spectra, the spatial mode shape at each wavelength was determined. Discrete spectral features are associated with symmetrical spatial patterns arising from the host fiber geometry and suggest the electromagnetic mode pairing between the longer wavelength solitons and associated visible dispersive waves. Clear differences between supercontinua generated in fundamental and higher order electromagnetic modes exist. These data should inform theoretical studies as the solitons and the dispersive wave generated by fission may be matched by spatial orientation of the electromagnetic mode that both occupy. ©2013 Optical Society of America.

We have used the surface sensitivity of laser sputter neutral mass spectrometry to make measurements of clusters sputtered from AuAl alloys surfaces with high dynamic range. Polycrystalline AuAl4 and Au 4Al were bombarded with 15 keV Ar+ at 60 incidence, and the resulting secondary neutral yield distributions were measured using laser postionization mass spectrometry. Neutral clusters containing up to 28 atoms were observed and exhibited an odd-even variation in signal dependent on the stability of the photoion. Clusters sputtered from Au4Al were gold rich compared to the substrate and the yield of neutral clusters containing n atoms, Yn, was found to follow a power in n, i.e. Yn ¿ n-d, where the exponent d was approximately 3.4. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. A model of noncascade sputtering is proposed to explain the mass distribution observed by MacFarlane and co-workers in the sputtering of insulin by 90 MeV 127I20+ ions. The ejection of molecular ions from insulin is considered to be induced by vibrational excitation. The ensuing calculations using RRKM theory show that the relative abundance of the ejected species can be fitted to our model yielding realistic values for both the energy deposited by the incident ion and the activation energies required for the ejection of the molecular species. © 1985 American Institute of Physics.

MgO crystals which contain dissolved traces of H2O eventually acquire an excess oxygen content, MgO1+, because OH- pairs, associated with cation vacancies, convert in part into molecular H2 and peroxy anions, O22-. While H2 molecules are lost from the crystal, the vacancy-bound O22- remain as spin-paired, self-trapped positive holes. Probably at this stage the MgO surface is negatively charged. Around 800 K the O22- decay, releasing unbound positive holes, i.e., highly mobile O- states. They lead to an oxygen release from the crystal surface and a positive surface charge. With the assumption that the vacancy-bound holes are essentially immobile the space-charge distribution in the subsurface region and the associated electric field and potential were calculated for different temperatures and as a function of charge carrier concentration. The width of the space-charge region is of the order of 10-50 nm, decreasing with increasing concentration, while the field at the surface increases. At a concentration as small as 10-20 ppm the field at the surface is of the order of 3.8 × 107 V m-1. At higher temperatures when cation vacancies are mobilized, the negatively charged bound holes will diffuse and drift toward the surface modifying the surface charge and subsurface space-charge layer. When all excess oxygen and excess cation vacancies are annealed out the MgO surface will probably again become negatively charged. © 1984 The American Physical Society.

The pile up patterns arising in nanoindentation are shown to be indicative of the sample crystal symmetry. To explain and interpret these patterns, complementary molecular dynamics simulations and experiments have been performed to determine the atomistic mechanisms of the nanoindentation process in single crystal Fe{ 110}. The simulations show that dislocation loops start from the tip and end on the crystal surface propagating outwards along the four in-plane <111> directions. These loops carry material away from the indenter and form bumps on the surface along these directions separated from the piled-up material around the indenter hole. Atoms also move in the two out-of-plane <111 > directions causing propagation of subsurface defects and pile-up around the hole. This finding is confirmed by scanning force microscopy mapping of the imprint, the piling-up pattern proving a suitable indicator of the surface crystallography. Experimental force-depth curves over the depth range of a few nanometers do not appear smooth and show distinct pop-ins. On the sub-nanometer scale these pop-ins are also visible in the simulation curves and occur as a result of the initiation of the dislocation loops from the tip.
