Career Summary

Biography

Anni is a lecturer at The University of Newcastle, Australia, with a strong interest in architectural graphics, design and sustainable development. She is a registered architect in Germany with considerable experience working on the design and construction on a variety of projects including small to medium-dense residential and office buildings as well as industrial and public projects. Anni taught building law and computational design at the University of Applied Sciences in Koblenz, Germany.

In 2007, Anni worked as Research Assistant for the School, from 2009 she taught Communication courses (ARBE1100, ARBE1103) in architecture and construction management programs as well as Sustainable design (ARBE2505) and Architectural design (ARBE1200, ARBE1220, ARBE3200 and ARBE3221) in the undergraduate program. Her research interests are design theories on the perception of space.

Research Expertise
Anni’s professional interests lie in the realm of design (also urban design) and sustainable development. She has a strong interest in architectural theory on the perception of space.

Teaching Expertise
Anni is the course coordinator of ARBE1103 Communication in the Built Environment 2 and is experienced in teaching CAD online. She enjoys teaching in the design studio and also teaches into Communication 1 (drawing). Before, Anni taught building law and computational design in Germany.

Administrative Expertise
Anni is the course coordinator of one of the biggest and most challenging classes in our School (ARBE1103). This course is delivered in dual-mode face-to-face and online for on-campus students and distance learners. Anni as a part of a small team developed an Online Orientation Module in Blackboard for Construction Management distance learners to manage their expectations and to brief them about university services and policies.

Collaborations
Anni has collaborated with colleagues from the University of Newcastle on teaching and learning related projects such as the analysis of both Australian Architecture and Construction Management programs as well as on projects about Online Learning. Currently, Anni is enrolled in a research higher degree and collaborates with her supervisor on the analysis of an architectural theory about the perception of space.

Prospect-refuge theory proposes that environments which offer both outlook and enclosure provoke not only feelings of safety but also of spatially derived pleasure. This theory, which was adopted in environmental psychology, led Hildebrand to argue for its relevance to architecture and interior design. Hildebrand added further spatial qualities to this theory - including complexity and order - as key measures of the environmental aesthetics of space. Since that time, prospect-refuge theory has been associated with a growing number of works by renowned architects, but so far there is only limited empirical evidence to substantiate the theory. This paper analyses and compares the methods used in 30 quantitative attempts to examine the validity of prospect-refuge theory. Its purpose is not to review the findings of these studies, but to examine their methodological bases and biases and comment on their relevance for future research in this field. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
