Biography

Emeritus Professor Page is an internationally recognized researcher for his contribution to pure and applied research in the field of structural masonry and is the leader of the largest and most active masonry research group in Australia. His research has been supported by the Australian Research Council continuously since 1981 and his Chair has been supported by the clay brick industry through the Clay Brick and Paver Institute (now Think Brick Australia) since 1991. That support is continuing and is clear recognition of the relevance of his research to Australian industry. This was recognised in 2006 by the award of The Brick Industry Medal for his services to the brick industry. Page's research first gained international recognition for his fundamental work in the 1980s on the constitutive modelling of the in-plane behaviour of masonry. Because of the complexity of the experimentation associated with this research, the results are still regularly cited and the results used by numerous international researchers in developing masonry constitutive models. This fundamental modelling work has continued, but has been complemented by a wide range of more practically oriented research and specialist consulting in the masonry area, particularly related to the development of the Masonry Structures Code AS3700 (Page has been Chair of that committee for a number of years). In this context a publication on the compressive behaviour of masonry was awarded the prestigious W H Warren and R W Chapman medals in 1988 from the Institution of Engineers Australia. Added impetus and recognition of his research came as a result of the 1989 Newcastle Earthquake which revealed widespread problems with masonry construction. Much of the outcomes of the ensuing research have been incorporated into building regulations, and that work still continues. Over the past five years the activities of his research group have also expanded into the building science area with studies into the thermal performance of masonry housing. This work has been funded by industry and three ARC linkage grants to a total value in excess of 1.5 million dollars. Professor Page was also the founding Chair of the highly successful Australasian Masonry Conference series and has been a member of numerous technical committees of masonry conferences in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States and Brazil. He is also a member of the editorial board of Masonry International. Since 1978 he has contributed to 11 monographs, has authored or co-authored over 180 refereed publications and been awarded $5.5 million dollars of research funding from competitive and industry sources. Professor Page is a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, a Fellow of the Masonry Society (USA), and an Honorary Fellow of Engineers Australia.

Research interests are in the field of structural masonry and building science. Structural masonry research relates to the fundamental behaviour of masonry (constitutive material modellling, analytical techniques etc), behaviour of masonry structural elements and buildings under both static and seismic loads, and the general design of masonry structures. Building science research is in the area of thermal performance of housing, particularly the use of thermal mass to improve the energy efficiency.

Statistical analyses are important for real-world validation of theoretical model predictions. In this article, a statistical analysis of real data shows empirically how thermal resistance, thermal mass, building design, season and external air temperature collectively affect indoor air temperature. A simple, four-point, diurnal, temperature-by-time profile is used to summarise daily thermal performance and is used as the response variable for the analysis of performance. The findings from the statistical analysis imply that, at least for moderate climates, the best performing construction/design will be one in which insulation and thermal mass arrangements can be dynamically altered to suit weather and season.

An experimental study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of strengthening unreinforced-masonry (URM) shear panels with near surface-mounted (NSM) fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) strips. A total of 23 wall panels (5 URM and 18 reinforced) were subjected to vertical precompression combined with either monotonic or increasing reversing cycles of in-plane lateral displacement under fixed-fixed boundary conditions. Two wall aspect ratios (height/length) and six different reinforcement schemes were tested. The experimental program was designed to produce diagonal cracking in the URM specimens and hence investigate the effectiveness of the various reinforcement schemes in controlling this failure mode. This was achieved for the aspect ratio 1 wall panels. The study revealed that the FRP strengthening was effective in improving the ultimate load, displacement capacity, ductility, and energy dissipation compared with the URM response. For the aspect ratio 0.5 panels, base sliding failures dominated the experimental program, making it difficult to fully assess the effectiveness of the various reinforcing schemes.

In order to increase the energy dissipation of wall/frame elements subjected to in plane shear loading a conceptually new system for masonry infilled RC frame has been proposed and proved as effective. The interaction between frame and infilled panel is considered as the major cause of the nonlinear behavior of structure. In this paper, the experimental results are briefly summarized and a micro finite element model is developed to simulate the monotonic response of the masonry infilled structure. A novel type of element called "initial gap element" is presented to simulate the gap between the frame and panel to allow the continual simulation of the response for the full load cycle. All the material parameters are experimentally evaluated. The initial testing included free vibration and cyclic tests on a bare RC frame followed by cyclic test on the RC frame infilled with a dry-stacked concrete brick panel. These results are used to verify the accuracy of the model. It is shown that the model is able to simulate the failure mechanisms exhibited by experiment including the crushing and cracking of the concrete frame and the diagonal compressive stress contribution of the masonry panel. The load-displacement response predicted by the model was also in good agreement with that obtained from the tests. Furthermore, the model was used for ultimate analysis, which discovered four typical stages of structural response of the dry-stack infilled RC frame and found the friction between bricks in the dry-stacked panel contributes significantly (about 50%) to the assembly. © 2014 Politechnika Wroclawska.
