The Degree

1.      The degree of Master shall be an ungraded degree awarded for research that demonstrates that the student has a thorough understanding of the relevant techniques in the field demonstrated both by their application and a thorough review of the literature; has managed to demonstrate competence in the chosen field through judicious selection and application of methods to yield fruitful results; has the capacity to evaluate these results critically; and has the capacity to present well written work.

Admission to Candidature

2.      To be eligible for admission to candidature an applicant shall:

a)   have satisfied all of the requirements for admission to the degree of Bachelor with Honours Class 1 or Honours Class II, Division 1 or any other degree approved for this purpose by the Pro Vice-Chancellor (or nominee); or

b)   have satisfied all the requirements at a standard recommended by the relevant Heads of Schools for admission to a degree of Bachelor in the University or another degree approved for this purpose by the Pro Vice-Chancellor (or nominee) on the recommendations of the relevant Heads of Schools; or

c)   in exceptional cases produce evidence of possessing such other academic or professional qualifications and/or experience as may be approved by the Pro Vice-Chancellor (or nominee) on the recommendation of the relevant Heads of Schools; or

d)   in some disciplines (education, medical physics, nursing, social work, social sciences, surgery) have completed a minimum standard of professional experience as required by the Pro Vice-Chancellor (or nominee) on the recommendation of the Head of School.

3.      An applicant shall not be admitted to candidature unless adequate supervision and resources are available. Whether these are available shall be determined by the Pro Vice-Chancellor (or nominee) after considering advice from the Head of School.

4.      The candidate shall submit three copies of the thesis in accordance with the provisions of the Rules Governing Research Higher Degrees and the Thesis Preparation and Submission Guidelines.

Examination of thesis

 

5.      The thesis shall be examined in accordance with the provisions of the Rules Governing Research Higher Degrees.  The Pro Vice-Chancellor (or nominee) shall appoint two examiners, at least one of whom shall not be a member of the staff of the University.

Transfer of Candidature from Doctoral Degree

6.         A candidate for a Doctor of Philosophy degree by research in the University may be permitted to transfer candidature to the degree subject to approval from the supervisor, Head of School and Pro Vice-Chancellor (or nominee).

7.         A Doctor of Philosophy degree candidate seeking to transfer to the degree will need to satisfy the requirements of the confirmation process as prescribed in the Rules Governing Research Higher Degrees at a level appropriate for Masters candidature.

8.                  Except with the permission of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (or nominee), candidates who transfer from a Doctoral degree shall be deemed to have commenced candidature from the time of admission to that degree.

Time Requirements

9.      The program shall be completed and submitted for examination in:

a)   not less than one year of full-time enrolment or equivalent part-time, from admission to candidature, except with the permission of the Research Training Sub-Committee; and

b)     not more than two full-time years of enrolment or equivalent part-time enrolment from admission to candidature, except with the permission of the Pro Vice-Chancelllor. (or nominee)

Qualification for the Degree

10.    To qualify for admission to the degree, a candidate shall enrol and satisfy the requirements prescribed in this degree Schedule as well as any other requirements imposed by the Pro Vice-Chancellor or Research Training Sub-Committee.  The candidate will be recommended for admission to the degree by the Dean, Graduate Studies on the advice of the Research Training Sub-Committee.
