1.      Context/Overview

The University will award relevant undergraduate bachelor degrees and postgraduate coursework masters degrees as an ordinary degree except where students achieve a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 6.0 based on all studies undertaken in the program, when the degree will be awarded ‘with Distinction’.

This guideline defines the circumstances by which students are deemed eligible and which units are utilised in the calculation of the GPA for the purpose of awarding a degree ‘with Distinction’.

This guideline must be read in conjunction with the Undergraduate Awards and Programs Schedule [000960], and the Postgraduate Coursework Awards and Programs Schedule [000961].

2.      Definitions

In the context of this document:

award means an academic qualification that is conferred when a student has met the relevant program requirements;

credit means the principle of accepting a student's prior learning or previous studies as being, in whole or in part, either identical to or the equivalent of studies contributing to a University of Newcastle award;

cross institutional study means approved study completed at another institution which counts toward the University of Newcastle program;

cumulative GPA mean the Grade Point Average calculated over all units undertaken within the program;

GPA means the Grade Point Average calculated over the specified number of units at a particular level;

program means a program of learning, approved by the Academic Senate, that leads to the conferral of an award.

3.      Guidelines

3.1.     Awarding a degree ‘with Distinction’

3.1.1.      To qualify for the degree a student must satisfactorily complete a program of study approved by the Academic Senate.

3.1.2.      The degree will be awarded as an ordinary degree, or the degree will be awarded 'with Distinction' to those students who gain a minimum GPA of 6.0 based on all studies undertaken in the program.

3.2.     Determining Eligibility

3.2.1.       In determining an undergraduate student’s eligibility to be awarded their degree ‘with Distinction’, students must:

  1. meet all program requirements and be eligible to be awarded an ordinary degree;
  2. complete at least 50 per cent of their program at The University of Newcastle; and
  3. achieve a minimum GPA of 6.0 based on all studies undertaken in the program.

3.3.     Calculation of the GPA

3.3.1.       A cumulative GPA will be calculated for each graduating student to determine their eligibility to be awarded the degree ‘with Distinction’ as per the Grade Point Average Calculation Guideline [000968].

3.4.     Exceptions

3.4.1.       Students who complete a degree under an approved articulation arrangement where less than 50 per cent of their units are completed at the University, will be eligible to be awarded their degree ‘with Distinction’ provided they achieve a minimum GPA of 6.0 based on all studies undertaken in the program.

3.5.     Exclusions

3.5.1.       The below listed undergraduate bachelor degrees or postgraduate coursework masters degrees are not eligible to be awarded ‘with Distinction’.

      - Bachelor of Engineering

3.5.2.       The award of 'with Distinction' for the Bachelor of Medicine - Joint Medical Program (JMP) is to be made in accordance with the Award of Bachelor of Medicine Degree with Distinction Guideline [000845].

3.5.3.       Professional Doctorate programs are not eligible to be awarded 'with Distinction'.
