1.      Introduction

The University of Newcastle will ensure that a Course Outline is made available to each enabling, undergraduate, postgraduate and course work student for each course they undertake.

This policy must be read in conjunction with the Course Outlines Procedure 000938 which supports this policy.

2.      Policy Intent

This policy and its procedure are designed to ensure Course Outlines for enabling, undergraduate and postgraduate courses contain the information required so that students are informed as to the requirements of the course. These Course Outlines will be delivered in a consistent manner to students studying at the University of Newcastle.

Research Higher Degree students should refer to their Supervisor for information about the RHD courses that they are undertaking.

3.      Relevant Definitions

In the context of this document:

term means a period of time for the delivery of a course in which students enrol and for which they are charged fees; this could be a semester, trimester, summer term etc.

4.      Policy provisions / principles

4.1.     Approval

The Course Outline must be approved by the Head of School or nominee prior to distribution. Any subsequent changes must be approved by the Head of School.

4.2.     Delivery of Course Outlines

The Course Outline will be supplied electronically via the learning management system (e.g. Blackboard).

The Course Coordinator must arrange a copy to be provided in an appropriate format and timeframe to those students with a print disability who request a Course Outline.

4.3.     Availability of Course Outline

An approved Course Outline will be available by the first day of term for every course being offered that term. After the first week of term the content of a course outline (see Clause 3.4) can be changed only in exceptional circumstances and with approval of the relevant Head of School. If revised, once approved, the Course Outline will be provided to students in the same manner as the original.

4.4.     Content of Course Outline

The content of the Course Outlines is listed in the Procedure. The policy and its procedure are to be followed by all Faculties, the Wollotuka Institute and the English Language and Foundation Studies Centre to avoid variation and inconsistency in their application.

4.5.     Storage of Approved Course Outlines

The approved Course Outline and any subsequently approved version must be stored electronically in the Faculty Quality Assurance Folder.
