Approval and Establishment of New Courses Guideline

1.      Introduction

These Guidelines provide advice on the criteria for approving the establishment of new courses. They support the University’s quality assurance processes and its strategic priorities in relation to teaching.

2.      Approval

2.1.     A new course may only be offered after

  1. the content of the course has been approved by the relevant Faculty Board; and
  2. the course has been approved for establishment and inclusion on the Course Availability List (CAL) by the Program and Course Approval Committee of Academic Senate.

2.2.     The priorities to be used in granting approval for the establishment and inclusion of new courses on the Course Availability List are as follows.

Priority 1

An on-line course which can be taken as an elective by students from across the University (that is on all campuses).

Priority 2

A face to face or an online course:

  1. which forms part of a new program whose academic content is proposed to be, or has been approved by Academic Senate and is being proposed for, or has been established, by Council and
  2. where justification is given that existing appropriate courses are not available.

Priority 3

A face to face or online course resulting from a program revision following an external program review, developed in accord with a Faculty Response and Action Plan approved by the Faculty Board.

Priority 4

A face to face or on-line course which is balanced by an equivalent deleted course across the Faculty.

Priority 5

A face to face or online course which does not fit into 1-3 above, only in exceptional circumstances and if accompanied by a detailed justification.
