1.      Introduction

This policy is in keeping with the University of Newcastle’s Institutional Strategic Plan (ISP) 2007-2011 which recognises the importance of the University engaging with its communities ”to provide opportunities for high quality education and opportunities for knowledge creation and transfer”. This policy stems from Priority 3 in the Strategic Priorities of the ISP: “We will extend our reputation as a national and international leader in Indigenous collaboration”.

This policy must be read in conjunction with the Protocols for Respecting and Acknowledging Country Procedure 000809.

2.      Policy Intent

The University community includes students and staff who are Aboriginal people. Moreover, the University has links with the wider Aboriginal community. An “acknowledgement of country” is a way through which the University can show respect for Aboriginal culture and heritage and acknowledge the ongoing relationship Aboriginal people have with the land.

3.      Policy Provisions / Principles

3.1.     Official acknowledgement of prior ownership of the land now occupied by the Callaghan, Ourimbah and Port Macquarie campuses of the University of Newcastle will be made at all official University functions and other functions as appropriate.

3.2.     At the beginning of the appropriate function, the chair or speaker will begin by acknowledging that the meeting or function is taking place in the country of the traditional custodians.

3.3.     Where the name of the traditional custodians is known, it will be specifically used. Where it is not known, a general acknowledgement will be given.
