Rules Governing Honorary Awards and Exceptional Service Medals

1. Establishment
1.1. This rule is established to replace and augment the provisions of Section 75 of the University of Newcastle By-law 1989 not provided for in the University of Newcastle By-law 1999.
2. Honorary Awards
2.1. The Council, of its own motion or on the recommendation of the Academic Senate may make awards ad eundem gradum or honoris causa to persons who, in the opinion of the Council are eligible for or might properly be honoured by those awards.
2.2. Honorary awards may be made:
2.2.1. to honour individuals who have had a special association with one or more elements of the University, or with the University generally, other than just a member of staff of the University; and
2.2.2. to honour others who, while they have had no direct association with the University, have made distinguished contributions either to higher education or to the community generally. Such people may be well-known citizens of New South Wales or Australia generally; or distinguished alumni or other citizens of overseas countries where the University has graduates.
3. Exceptional Service Medals
3.1. The Council may award an Exceptional Service Medal to recognise exceptional and sustained contributions by a staff member, former staff member or a member of the community towards some aspect of the University's activities.
4. Recommendations
4.1. A recommendation to award an Honorary Award or an Exceptional Service Medal may be made to the Council by a committee of the Council established for that purpose.
