UON researcher NSW Young Tall Poppy of the year
Dr Tracy Burrows was awarded the prestigious title of NSW Young Tall Poppy of the year at the 2016 award ceremony at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum.
In a competitive field of 13 bright young researchers, Tracy took out the top title due to her impressive research and the breadth and depth of her community engagement.
A prolific early-career researcher, Tracy is 5.3 years postdoc, with 78 publications in top ranked journals. Tracy has received multiple awards including the 2014 National Scopus Young Researcher in Medicine & Medical Sciences, 10 national/University awards for research and team research awards from the World Health Organisation.
Along with providing her expert opinion to the Medical Research Council in the UK, and the National Cancer Institute in the US, Tracy also provides public policy advice. She directly contributed to the NHMRC Australian Dietary Guidelines and DAA Best Practice Guidelines for obesity as lead reviewer.
Tracy’s passion for science communication was recognised by the judging panel, as going above and beyond in promoting the importance of optimising dietary intake. Tracy regularly engages with the media – and has also facilitated more than 50 community face-to-face programs to help families improve their lifestyle.
Obesity and overweight are major health issues, Tracy’s research investigates whether food addiction can influence weight management interventions and support bold policy approaches to help people lead healthier, happier lives.
