University of Newcastle researcher awarded NHMRC Fellowship
University of Newcastle researcher Professor Phil Hansbro has received a highly competitive NHMRC Principal Research Fellowship for a project titled Development of new therapies for respiratory diseases and infection.
Professor Hansbro is a leader in research programs in three fields; emphysema, asthma and infection, and is developing a fourth in lung cancer.
Each of these diseases has substantial issues that preclude effective treatment, however, Professor Hansbro has developed "world first" experimental models of these complex diseases.
Professor Hansbro is now in an ideal situation to maximise the potential of these new models and therapies.
In discovery programs he will continue and expand critical studies of pathogenesis to identify new therapeutic targets that will indicate new approaches for the prevention and treatment of these diseases.
As the Associate Director of the Priority Research Centre for Asthma and Respiratory Disease, Professor Hansbro works with around 100 researchers from clinical and biomedical fields at the University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Health.
His nationally competitive research group has identified how different infections affect the development and exacerbation of asthma.
Professor Hansbro's research develops and tests new therapies that have the commercial potential to become widely available to clinicians and patients.
