UON emerges as global innovation leader in THE World Rankings
The University of Newcastle (UON) stands firm in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, ranked in the top 300 universities in the world and in the top ten in Australia.
UON was also ranked in the top 150 universities in the world in the areas of 'Industry income' and 'International outlook'.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen, said the outcome of the independent ranking was an excellent result that reflected the University's international reputation for delivering high quality education and for collaboration with partners to ensure the translation of world-class research into outcomes that had demonstrated economic, cultural and social impact.
"Our success in the key 'International outlook' measure is built on the unique attraction of a research-intensive university placed in a vibrant region which draws high quality staff and students from across the world," said Professor McMillen.
UON also scored strongly for the category of 'Industry income', which measures the level of engagement between academics and their industry partners.
"UON is positioned as an outward looking university which engages with regional, national and international industry partners to deliver world-class innovation and real impact," said Professor McMillen.
"As just one example, our flagship institutes, the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources and the Hunter Medical Research Institute, are delivering impact in the important fields of energy, resources and translational health," said Professor McMillen.
A recent International Forum on Universities: Transforming Cities and their Regions, hosted by UON in Newcastle NSW, highlighted the importance of the role of research-intensive universities as drivers of innovation, regional economies, national productivity and international impact.
