UON a proud supporter of TiNA
Newcastle is a creative city, and there's no prouder celebration of this creativity than This Is Not Art Festival (TiNA), a long-weekend of experimental arts and events.
Each year thousands of creatives converge on Newcastle over the October long weekend for This Is Not Art – a festival for emerging artists and those who appreciate it.
The University of Newcastle (UON) has been Principal Supporter of This Is Not Art for the past three years. A diverse collection of our students, staff and alumni have long been involved in TiNA which is something we are very proud of.
The TiNA festival formed in 1998, the brainchild of former University of Newcastle student Marcus Westbury and has grown to become Australia's foremost experimental and emerging arts festival.
Over 180 events take place in venues across the city: from panel discussions, to workshops, to performances and parties. From Thursday October 1 to Sunday October 4, three festivals: Critical Animals, National Young Writers Festival and Crack Theatre combine to take over Newcastle's venues with a wide-ranging program with broad appeal from fringe theatre to professional development.
Many other UON alumni, students and staff are taking their creativity from the campus to the city at the festival. Third year Photomedia Student Tim Buchanan and PhD Candidate and Industry Scholar Dale Collier are the team behind experimental arts collective, HoboTechno. As independent visual artists, they have produced a number of projects for this year's festival, including 'Nomadic Projections' – digital narratives wandering neglected public spaces scattered throughout Newcastle CBD. The collective have also installed a live and reactive light show at the Newcastle Airport arrivals terminal, celebrating the experimental arts as a tool for community engagement and cultural development in the lead up to the festival.
In another community art experiment, Deb Mansfield, Associate Lecturer for the School of Creative Arts, is joining forces with UON Bachelor of Fine Arts Alumni, Maggie Hensel-Brown. The women will present a wide range of contemporary practices within the domestic environment of their city share house. Titled 'Friends With Benefits: Sharing is Caring', the event is billed as a one-night only art exhibition of inter-town love and good-hearted nepotism.
Poet, essayist and Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing, Keri Glastonbury will be on a panel Uncertain Spaces at the Lock-Up. As ex-Director of Critical Animals, Keri will join a panel asking, "What if the comforting, material certainties of life are not so certain?" This session weaves the tales of three journeys through three very different terrains.
2015 TiNA Marketing Manager Bec Dujin, who completed her Master of Marketing at the University of Newcastle with Distinction in 2013 says, "It is exciting to put my skills to use on a national event from my hometown base, at a time of reinvigoration as the festival comes of age. TiNA is the perfect embodiment of Newcastle a creative city."
