Students bound for Indo-Pacific
Five outstanding University of Newcastle (UON) undergraduates have received prestigious scholarships under the Australian Government's New Colombo Plan (NCP) to study in the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea.
As the top-ranked student in her host location of the Philippines, Bachelor of Development Studies student Lisa Butson was also named a New Colombo Plan Fellow.
Ms Butson said the scholarship was a dream come true and she would use her time in the Philippines to study water and wastewater management.
"A key issue for development in the Philippines, as in many parts of the world, is water. Access to clean water, proper sewage and sanitation are all issues that are faced by many countries, particularly after natural disasters. I want to learn how to improve these conditions," said Ms Butson.
University of Newcastle PVC International and Advancement, Winnie Eley, said the NCP scholars were inspirational students, who would contribute to the advancement of knowledge in fields of global relevance.
"The University of Newcastle believes the international mobility of our students is key to producing graduates who are ready to go out into the world and solve the many challenges facing it."
"Lisa's outstanding success is testament to the performance of our students on the world stage and we are incredibly proud of her achievement and the achievements of our other four recipients," Mrs Eley said.
The scholarships were awarded by the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) and the Minister for Foreign Affairs the Hon Julie Bishop MP at the NCP Scholarship Presentation Dinner on Monday 30 November 2015.
UON's five scholars will help lift knowledge of the Indo–Pacific in Australia and strengthen people-to-people and institutional relationships:
- Imogen Dean, Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours, Hong Kong University – Hong Kong
- Jodie Cochrane, Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Mathematics, Nanyang Technological University – Singapore
- Liam Jewell, Bachelor of Development Studies, Ateneo De Manila - Philippines
- Lisa Butson, Bachelor of Development Studies, De La Salle University – Philippines
- Ruby Bhave, Bachelor of Engineering (Civil)/Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental), Hanyang University - South Korea
