Samuel Legge Accepts Post-Doc Position at ANU
PhD (Physics) graduate, Samuel Legge, has recently accepted a postdoctoral position at the Australian National University, where he will be involved in developing lasers for quantum mechanics experiments.
The appointment presents an excellent opportunity for Samuel to further apply his PhD research, which investigated the non-linearity of light. Specifically, Samuel studied the mechanism behind powerful laser light and how the light travelled though specialised optical fibre to generate nonlinear effects, which produced a variety of vibrant colours.
“I found this research attractive because as well as being very experimental and hands on, it was also very pure science, and investigated fundamental effects and rules of the universe and the way light behaves in it,” Legge said.
Samuel grew up on his parents’ remote farm in Bulahdelah, NSW, and from a very early age, he discovered his interest in science and electronics. Samuel’s Year 10 work experience with Dr John Holdsworth in the Physics discipline at the University of Newcastle gave him a taste of Photonics which solidified his desire to become a scientist.
Throughout his ten years of study, Samuel was actively involved in UON’s student community. As a member of the NUSA Council and Physics Society Executive for many years, Samuel attended club and society events, and ran the UON Assassins games.
Prior to completing his PhD in 2016, Samuel completed his Bachelor of Science with Honours (Photonics) from 2007 to 2011.
