The geography discipline at UON is headed up by world-class academics with a range of experience in Australia and internationally.  Associate Professor Jenny Cameron, Head of Discipline for Geography and Environmental  studies, recently spent time as a visiting Professor to the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Department of Geography and Resource Management) to teach a semester-long undergraduate course based on her 2013 co-authored book Take Back the Economy: An Ethical Guide for Transforming Communities. The book has been translated into Korean and Spanish, and all teaching materials from the course are available online while also being translated into French for use in Quebec universities.

She is the 4th ever recipient of this highly competitive award that began in 2012. Dr Sherval will be working with their Department of Geography for 6 months (ranked 4th in the World) with scholars from Department’s Culture-Economy-Life research cluster , including renowned Professor Gavin Bridge.

Her research will focus on how women from local communities affected by the expansion of the mining industry are becoming active stake-holders in discussions with governments and corporations about their future and the survival of their towns and communities.

"The work will really assist in furthering my academic reputation and in developing research collaborations internationally," Dr Sherval said.
