Newcastle Writers Festival
Bookworms will have the opportunity to hear from the University of Newcastle's literary leaders at this year's Newcastle Writers Festival from April 4-6.
A number of free sessions are included in the festival program thanks to the University's gold sponsorship with a wide cross-section of the UON community involved, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Education and Arts, Professor John Germov said.
"The festival reflects the hunger in Newcastle for great writing in all its forms from poetry, blogging, feature writing to fiction and non-fiction," Professor Germov said.
"The University is very proud that so many of our staff, students and alumni are taking part as facilitators or speaking."
Renowned poet Dr David Musgrave will speak about How Poets Survive; co-founder of the Newcastle Poetry Prize,Dr Christopher Pollnitz will celebrate the growth of the event which is now considered one of the highest literary honours in Australia; and Dr Trisha Pender will explore the role women have played in literature and why we are yet to reach gender equality.
Four UON Creative Writing PhD students will share their manuscripts-in-progress which will include an insight into being the carer of a partner with Parkinson's disease and an exploration of the infamous Chelmsford Hospital in the panel Wordy Women, hosted by creative writing expert, Dr Keri Glastonbury.
"Impressively, many of the University's non-academic staff are also speaking about their experience as bloggers or working on books outside of their day job – including Linda Drummond who works in student communications at the University. SPC recently credited Linda with playing a key role in saving their company through her #SPCSunday campaign."
"We also have some of our historians exploring the fascinating cast of activists who are a part of Newcastle's colourful past in the panel Radical Newcastle which has culminated into a new book.
"This diversity is a true reflection of the talent in Newcastle. We have one of the strongest creative scenes in the country, with literary studies at the University of Newcastle listed by Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessment rankings as world standard.
"We see our partnership with the Newcastle Writers Festival as key investment in the future of our writers and the community."
UON writers will join a program that includes other leading speakers such as comedian Wendy Harmer, adventurer Tim Cope, and ex-Vogue editor Kirstie Clements.
