The University of Newcastle's Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment (TFI) will host its 4th annual Mine Rehabilitation Conference in Singleton on Thursday 25 September, 2014.

Mine rehabilitation

Held in partnership with the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, the event's program will focus on the restoration of biodiversity to mining-affected areas and will feature speakers from various Government agencies, as well as university researchers and mining industry stakeholders.

TFI Director, Professor Tim Roberts, said the annual conference was among the largest of its kind in Australia, with about 200 delegates expected to attend.

"It is an ideal opportunity for the various sectors to come together and share their unique approaches to re-establishing areas impacted by mining activity," Professor Roberts said."The rehabilitation of our ecological systems is vital and by holding these policy discussions, without a political agenda, we're helping to ensure the best environmental outcomes are realised."

Conference presentation highlights will include:

  • Promoting Herbaceous Plant Populations on Mine Rehabilitation in the Hunter Valley – Dr Carmen Castor and Dr Yvonne Nussbaumer, University of Newcastle
  • Coal & Allied's recent efforts to restore Central Hunter Ironbark Communities – Bill Baxter, Rio Tinto Coal Australia Coal & Allied
  • Build it and they still may not come – Using new knowledge to move beyond physical restoration of amphibian habitat – Alexandra Cullen, Dr John Clulow and Professor Michael Mahony
  • Developing and implementing Government policy, a case study – Upper Hunter Coal Strategic Assessment Sharon Molloy and Dominik Nicholls, NSW Office of Environment and Heritage

Professor Roberts said the event was also open to interested members of the public, with online registration now available.
