University of Newcastle (UON) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen, will be participating in Vinnies CEO Sleepout for a third year running, trading in her bed for cardboard sheets to help combat homelessness in the region.

This year UON will double its fundraising power with Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Professor Kevin Hall to join Professor McMillen in raising awareness and funds for this important cause.

"I am proud to return for my third year in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout and it is terrific Professor Hall will also be joining me to Sleepout. The Sleepout is an initiative that provides help for some of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable in our community," said Professor McMillen.

"University staff and students, good colleagues and friends have shown extraordinary generosity in the last two years. In 2014, UON won an award for the most individual donations for the Sleepout, with over $10,000 raised. It would be extremely special to again equal, or to build on that figure this year."

With a 2015 national fundraising goal of $10 million, all CEOs are rising to the challenge to make a difference.

The Newcastle event will be held on Thursday 18 June at Hunter Stadium and will raise funds for Vinnies homeless and support services in the Hunter region.

In Newcastle the funds raised from last year's Sleepout ensured that Vinnies provided night beds to more than 10,650 people, meals to more than 7,660 people and assistance more than 18,200 people.
