Architecture Exhibition
A jail above Kotara Westfield, a lunar research facility located on the moon, and an urban farm that occupies the rail corridor in Newcastle are just a few of the architectural designs developed by University of Newcastle final year Master of Architecture students, on display at the Christ Church Cathedral in Newcastle and Pier 2/3 in Walsh Bay, Sydney later this month.
The designs highlight the innovative and unique potential for new building types and question the future of the built environment.
"The exhibitions are a chance for future students to explore the potential of the University of Newcastle Architecture program, which has a world class ranking, and for potential employers to discover emerging talent," said Chris Tucker, program convenor.
Works are exhibited with hand-drawn and digital drawings, digitally projected movies, scale models, sound recordings and design books. The diversity in the various mediums of communication make for an all-encompassing exhibition experience, further enriched in Newcastle by the remarkable surrounds of Christ Church Cathedral.
The 2013 final year student exhibition is titled Echoes as many projects are architectural reflections of the memory of a site and moral concerns.
"The architectural process is often more compelling than the final product. This exhibition tells the story about the creation of the work, including the deeper ideas underlying the making of the project," said Mr Tucker.
The exhibition follows the final critiques which mark the culmination of five years of architectural education in the Bachelor and Masters Programs at the University of Newcastle. In their final year the students are encouraged to analyse and critique current issues facing not only the architectural profession, but society and individuals in a global context.
The Newcastle exhibition will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, 27th – 29th November, 2013 (Doors open 6pm opening night 27th) and the Sydney exhibition at Pier 2/3 Walsh Bay, Friday 6th December.
