SMART continues to expand in Northern NSW

Monday, 3 July 2017

The SMART Program was excited to welcome six new presenters to the team in May: Adam, Erin, Elyse, Hayden, Kelly and Sharni, who now join Charlotte, Laura, Nathan and Stephanie! Our presenters enjoyed connecting with families, educators and service providers at the 5th annual ‘You’re Kidding Me Expo’ in Glendale on May 17th.

Since our last news update, the SMART team have visited Gloucester, Stroud, Taree, Nabiac, Bulahdelah and Raymond Terrace, delivering SMARTbots shows and accredited ‘Robotics in the Classroom’ PD sessions for over 500 primary school students and teachers.

We have also been very busy with loads of other events! In May, over 600 year 7 & 8 students experienced our 'Best of SMART' Liquid Nitrogen Science Show and took part in a hands-on CSI Forensic Science Workshop, as part of the Build ME a Future Days on campus at the University of Newcastle.

Our first 4-week Little Bang Discovery Club group has just wrapped up, in partnership with the Children’s Discovery Museum, Newcastle City Libraries and with funding support from the Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group! Twenty pre-schoolers and their parent/carers have enjoyed an hour of science exploration each week with Erin and Stephanie at Wallsend Library. We’re looking forward to our next Little Bang Discovery Club groups in August at New Lambton Library and October at City Library.

Our Little Scientist Australia facilitators Carly, Sarah and Shelley are looking forward to delivering Optics, Water and Air workshops for early childhood educators from 10th – 12th July and to presenting a Little Scientists taster session at the Pilot Childcare Conference on Saturday 22nd July in the Hunter Valley.

National Science Week is coming up fast, from 12th – 20th August! Keep an eye out for amazing experiments, explosions and hands on science exploration! SMART will host an interactive display at the Australian Museum’s Science Festival in Sydney on Saturday 12th August. On Thursday 17th August we are looking forward to bringing the Little Bang Discovery Club to Toronto Library in partnership with Lake Macquarie City Libraries.

Our brand new ‘Future Earth’ science show, celebrating the theme of 2017’s National Science Week, will also launch in August... exploring conservation, efficiency and sustainability. Find out more about National Science Week here: https://www.scienceweek.net.au/
