UON Team makes semi-final stage of 2015 Global Business Plan Challenge

A team from the Faculty of Business and Law at University of Newcastle (UON) has put forward an innovative business plan for a medical information communication system that makes real time information available to health professionals in their busy hospitals or medical practices. The business known as Alertikum was borne out of a real-world problem, how can medical professionals receive timely and relevant information in their fast paced hectic environment? Alertikum's Patient Alert Device (PAD) is a wearable device that relays key patient vital signs that can be retrieved by a resident, registrar or visiting medical officer, who then, if needed, are able to commence a rapid response process, saving vital seconds and minutes. Bridging the gap between patient and medical professional, potentially saving lives. The UoN team of Alertikum consists of under-graduates Robert Bozinovski, Thomas Koratty, Oliver Schwarzer, Jonathon Sharpe and is mentored by lecturer in strategy and entrepreneurial studies, Garry Haworth from Newcastle Business School.

The global innovation and entrepreneurship competition is run every two years by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, attracting hundreds of entrants from across the globe. Thirty teams are shortlisted in the secondary school and university divisions, with the semi-finalists presenting in Hong Kong, exchanging knowledge and skills on an international stage. The business plan has to meet some key criteria: be innovative and creative; technologically feasible; clear in organisational and management structure; and financially viable. The competition is judged by high profile academics and industry executives. To make the semi-final stage in a highly contested global competition is a commendation for the students and the Newcastle Business School.
