Tuesday, 17 June 2014

More than 200 staff and students attended the University Health Fair on Wednesday 4 June.

Icons representing good health

Students and staff were given the opportunity to sample a range of healthy initiatives specifically targeting physical, psychological, social and spiritual health and financial wellbeing.

More than 40 exhibitors were in attendance, including:

  • Mayfield Dental
  • Royal Life Saving
  • Headspace
  • Counselling service
  • ACON Sexual Health
  • NIB
  • St John
  • Quit Smoking
  • Medicare Local
  • NUSA
  • NUPSA
  • Chaplains
  • Vogue Eyes Optometrist
  • NuSport.

Interactive demonstrations included healthy cooking, free massages, free blood pressure and blood sugar checks, free asthma checks, Tai Chi, Zumba, education on the size of a standard alcoholic drink and advice on how to exercise anywhere.

Roanne Morrison advised that the Health Fair was a big hit with many students and staff 'walking the line' to see how intoxication affects their judgement.

The Health Fair was also an opportunity to showcase our leading researchers in health and wellbeing. Researchers from the Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group (TROG) Cancer Research, HMRI, and the Priority Research Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition were in attendance.  Nutrition and Dietetics researchers recruited participants for the Healthy Lifestyle Program - their study on adult men aged 18-25. Dr Geoff Skinner's interactive healthy xBox game was very popular among students.

Strong attendance and the diverse range of exhibitors demonstrates the interest in health and wellbeing among staff and students. The 2015 Health Fair is set to be bigger and better, with a strong focus on nutrition.

The Health Fair is a Healthy UON initiative.
