University appoints new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic)
Following an international search, the University has appointed Professor Andrew Parfitt to the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).
Professor Parfitt is currently Pro Vice-Chancellor and Vice President, Faculty of IT, Engineering and the Environment at the University of South Australia, a position he has held since 2007.
“With an emphasis on the student experience, Professor Parfitt has championed innovative academic approaches and practices, particularly in the areas of multi-disciplinary program development, the delivery of high quality online learning and working to ensure course design meets the needs of graduate employers,” Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen, said.
“As well as demonstrated leadership in teaching and learning, Professor Parfitt has an international reputation as a specialist in antenna and radio systems, with a focus on space science and technology.
“As an experienced academic leader with strong national and international credentials, Professor Parfitt is well placed to work with the University community to ensure we realise the goals of our Education Plan as we move forward with the NeW Directions strategic planning process.”
Professor Parfitt’s career highlights include leading the Cooperative Research Centre for Satellite Systems, the national research group responsible for launching FedSat, which was Australia’s first satellite in 30 years.
He holds a PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Adelaide, and has held adjunct academic positions at UniSA, the University of Adelaide, the University of Sydney and Macquarie University.
In a professional capacity, Professor Parfitt is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and has been Chair of both its South Australia and New South Wales sections. He is Chair of the Australian Academy of Science National Committee for Radio Science, a Fellow of Engineers Australia, and a board member of the Defence Teaming Centre and the Technology Industry Association.
Professor Parfitt will start in the position in January 2013.
