New appointment for Newcastle's former Vice-Chancellor Professor Nick Saunders
The University of Newcastle congratulates former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nick Saunders AO, on his appointment to Bond University in Queensland.
Professor Saunders will take up the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost next month.
Professor Saunders retired as Vice-Chancellor at Newcastle last October after seven years in the role, during which time he led significant growth in research, teaching and learning, engagement and governance.
”Under Professor Saunders' leadership, our university grew from a successful local institution to one with a strong presence across many campuses and regions,” Newcastle’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen, said.
”Bond University is fortunate to have secured someone of such high calibre and we wish Professor Saunders well in his new role.”
In 2012 Professor Saunders was appointed an Order of Australia in recognition of his contribution and distinguished service to medicine and higher education. 2002 Professor Saunders was awarded the Centenary Medal from the Australian Government for his contribution to academic medicine.
Prior to joining the University of Newcastle, Professor Saunders was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University; and Head of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Flinders University. He has also held positions at Harvard University in the United States and McMaster University in Canada.
Professor Saunders' contributions to research and scholarship are in the fields of respiratory medicine and medical education. He has advised government committees and medical research councils for state and federal governments in Australia.
Professor Saunders will commence his new position at Bond on 8 October 2012.
