Chamber Choir shines with gold medal glory

The University of Newcastle Chamber Choir has struck gold at the Australian National Eisteddfod held in Canberra.

The University of Newcastle Chamber Choir has struck gold at the Australian National Eisteddfod held in Canberra.

Competing against choirs from across the nation, the Choir won first places in the Open Sacred, Contemporary Choral, and Australia-Britain divisions.

The Choir then went on to win the major prize of the competition, the Australian Open Choir Championship – a title the Choir previously won in 2007.

Eisteddfod adjudicators, Paul Holley and Michael Griffin, thanked the Choir for “a very beautifully executed performance”, noting its fantastic program and ability to sing well as an ensemble.

The Choir sang its virtuosic program from memory, with ten works ranging from renaissance through to contemporary, pop and Australian music.

The latest win adds to the Choir’s recent successes in the Sydney Eisteddfod, and at the World Choir Games in Cincinatti, where it won three silver medals.
