For the second time in a week, the University of Newcastle has been ranked among the best in the world by an independent global ranking system.

Newcastle was yesterday placed at number 45 by the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings in its inaugural ‘100 Under 50’. The Times Higher Education ‘100 Under 50’ measures the performance of higher education institutions across the world that are under 50 years of age across teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.

Newcastle was placed third among the 14 Australian universities that made the global list.

The Times Higher Education announcement followed Newcastle’s international ranking earlier in the week by the QS World Rankings ‘Top 50 under 50’, which placed the University at number 33 of young universities in the world.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen, said the Times Higher Education ranking was evidence that Newcastle’s reputation for high calibre education and world class research and innovation was building on the international stage.

“The University of Newcastle is a relatively young institution that makes significant contributions to the economic growth and social cohesion in our regions and across the world.

“Our inclusion in these two important rankings means globally we are on the list of ‘ones to watch’.

“The QS and Times Higher Education rankings are an important acknowledgement of the University’s emerging global leadership role and the efforts of our staff, students and community.”
